state of Ohio from the Northwest Territory, and designated the remaining area

as the Indiana Territory. The territorial name was retained when Indiana became

at Old Fort Wayne, Indian Territory.

 

1868        May 22, The

Great Train Robbery took place near Marshfield, Ind., as seven members of the

Reno gang made off with $96,000 ($98k) in cash, gold and bonds.

 

1925        Mar 18, The

great Tri-State Tornado killed 695 people in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri and

injured some 13,000 people, and causing $17 million in property damage.

 

1963        Oct 31, Leaking

propane gas exploded and killed 64 at " Holiday on Ice " in Indiana.

 

1987        Oct 20, Ten

people were killed when an Air Force jet crashed into a Ramada Inn hotel near

Indianapolis International Airport after the pilot, who was trying to make an

emergency landing, ejected safely.

 

1998        Jun 18, In

Portage, Ind., a commuter train struck a truck and dislodged a steel coil that

crashed into the first train car and crushed 3 people to death.

 

1998        Jul 28, In

Indiana explosions at the coal-fired generating plant of Southern Energy Co. in

Hammond injured 16 people.

 

2002        May 17, Midwest

flooding left as many as 9 people dead over the last 2 weeks.
