A convention was called for May 24, 1790, and the towns instructed their delegates for or against the union. So severe was the parturition that Providence had provided for a possible separation from the state, if it should not adopt the Constitution. May 29, the instrument was adopted by a majority of only two votes. So close was the contest between anarchy and order. Rhode Island State Airport (later Theodore Francis Green Airport) in Warwick, dedicated on September 26, 1931, was the country's first state-owned airport. 1956       May 26, 0611 AM, Aircraft carrier " Bennington " burned off RI, killing 103. One of her catapults exploded. July 16, 1999, 9:40 p.m. John F. Kennedy Jr crashed An air accident occurred shortly after takeoff from Westerly Airport on Sept. 5, 1999. Senator John Chafee died in Maryland at age 77. 2000       Jan 28, In Providence Cornel Young Jr., 28, an off duty police officer, was shot dead by 2 police officers when he tried to assist in a street confrontation. 2000       Jul 15, Former governor and senator John O. Pastore died at age 93. September 3, 2000, 2:00 PM, SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Three people were killed Sunday when a small plane crashed in a wooded area of South Kingstown, police said. 2001       Apr 2, Vincent Cianci Jr. (59), mayor of Providence, RI, was indicted by a federal grand jury on racketeering charges. A brush fire shot flames close to 40 feet in the air not far from the Albion Pub last weekend, sparking calls from neighbors and bar patrons just after 10 p.m. Sunday, 21 April 2002, as firefighters rushed to put the blaze out before it could spread. 2002       Jun 8, Carlos Pacheco, an employee at the Providence Journal production plant, killed 2 co-workers and wounded another. He was later found dead in a burned out car in Warwick. 20 February 2003, At least 95 people are now known to have died in a massive blaze at a rock club in the eastern US state of Rhode Island. Witnesses have been describing the horror of fire which took hold at about 2300 local time on Thursday (0400 GMT) at the start of the act by the heavy metal band. November 2, 2003, 11:15 AM, small plane plunged into Long Island Sound on Sunday morning killing 2. The couple and friends in two other planes took off together around 11 a.m. from Westerly State Airport in Rhode Island The resulting midair crash 100 feet over a Westerly Airport runway Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, killed the two men aboard the Cessna. 2005       Mar 26, 2:00 PM, A small plane, carrying 2 Rhode Island families from vacation in Florida, crashed near Penn. State Univ. All 6 people aboard were killed. Aug 25, 2005, 8:10 p.m. A 14-year-old Providence girl on her way to a mall for back-to-school shopping was killed, and a Cranston teenager was seriously injured in an accident Thursday night, the Providence police said. Dec 21, 2005, 9:45 AM, Exeter pilot, 76, is pulled from destroyed plane in Conn Jan 22, 2006, 2 injured in plane crash March 18, 2006, Horses Perish in Rhode Island Blaze. A devastating fire destroyed a Charlestown boarding stable late Saturday night. All 13 horses inside the barn died in the fire. April 1, 2006, 9:55 PM, Woman Dies In I-195 Crash April 2, 2006, W. Warwick Marine dies in flash flood in Iraq On September 21, 1876, a shock was reported felt at Fairhaven and Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and Newport, Rhode Island. Another strong tremor originating in the St. Lawrence Valley on November 4, 1877, was felt slightly in Rhode Island. A February 27, 1883, earthquake that probably was centered in Rhode Island was felt from New London, Connecticut, to Fall River, Massachusetts. Within the State, it was felt (intensity V) from Bristol to Block Island. A large area, estimated at over 5,000,000 square kilometers, of Eastern Canada and the United States (south to Virginia and west to the Mississippi River) was affected by a magnitude 7 shock on February 28, 1925. The epicenter was in the St. Lawrence River region; minor damage was confined to a narrow belt on both sides of the river. Intensity V effects were felt on Block Island and at Providence; intensity IV, at Charlestown. The major submarine earthquake (magnitude 7.2) in the vicinity of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland on November 18, 1929, was felt throughout the New England States. Moderate vibrations were felt on Block Island and at Chepachet, Newport, Providence, and Westerly. Another widely felt earthquake occurred on November 1, 1935, near Timiskaming, Quebec, Canada. Measured at magnitude 6.25, the shock was felt (intensity IV) on Block Island and at Providence and Woonsocket. The total area affected was about 2,500,000 square kilometers of Canada and the United States. The strong earthquakes centered near Lake Ossipee, New Hampshire, on December 20 and 24, 1940, caused some damage in the epicentral area and intensity V effects (pictures knocked from walls) at Newport, Rhode Island. Additional reports included intensity IV effects at Central Falls, Pascoag, Providence, and Woonsocket, and intensity I - III effects at Kingston, New Shoreham, and Wakefield. Minor intensities were also reported from a September 4, 1944, shock in the Massena, New York - Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, area. Kingston, Lansdale, Providence, Wakefield, and Woonsocket reported intensity I - III. A magnitude 4.5 earthquake on October 16, 1963, near the coast of Massachusetts caused some cracked plaster (intensity V) at Chepachet. Many people in the city reported rattling windows and dishes; rumbling earth sounds were also noted. Other places in the northern section of Rhode Island felt the tremor with less intensity. Two small earthquakes about 14 months apart, were felt in the Narragansett Bay region. Windows and doors rattled and trees and bushes were shaken slightly (intensity V) at Warwick on December 7, 1965. The abrupt onset and rapid motion frightened many persons. Small objects and furnishings shifted at Bristol. The total felt area covered about 1,000 square kilometers of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. On February 2, 1967, the lower Bay area was shaken. The shock, measure at magnitude 2.4 caused intensity V effects at Middleton, Newport, and North Kingstown, but no damage was sustained; it was also felt at Adamsville and Jamestown. A slight disturbance not reported by seismographs in the area shook houses and rattle windows throughout Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts on February 3, 1973. Noises like an explosion or sonic boom were heard in many areas. A magnitude 5.2 earthquake in western Maine on June 14, 1973, caused some damage in the epicentral region and was reported felt over an area of 250,000 square kilometers of New England and Quebec Province, Canada. The intensities in Rhode Island were IV at Charlestown and I - III at Bristol, East Providence, Harmony, and Providence.
