the 7th state to ratify the Constitution. Maryland became the seventh state on

April 28, 1788. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln placed Maryland

under military control.

1904        Feb 7, A fire in

Baltimore raged for about 30 hours and destroyed more than 1,500 buildings over

80 blocks. The fired caused an estimated $80 million in damages

 

1944        Nov 29, Johns

Hopkins hospital performed the 1st open heart

surgery.

 

1963        Dec 8, 20:59

EST, Three fuel tanks exploded when a jetliner, struck by lightning, crashed

near Elkton, Maryland. 81 people died. This was the only case of a lightning

caused crash.

 

1987        Jan 4, An Amtrak

train bound from Washington to Boston collided with Conrail engines approaching

from a side track in Chase, Md., and 16 people were killed
