January 2, 1788 - Georgia is

the 4th state to ratify the Constitution. Georgia, one of the thirteen

colonies, ratified the U.S. Constitution on January 2, 1788, becoming the

fourth state to do so; it joined the Confederacy on January 19, 1861, and

re-entered the Union after the Civil War.

July 15, 1870 - Georgia is

the 11th state to be readmitted to the Union.

capital was moved from Milledgeville, originally designed to be the state

capital, to Atlanta.

 

1893        Oct 27,

Hurricane hit the US coast between Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, SC.

 

1904        Dec 28, Farmers

in Georgia burned two million bales of cotton to prop up falling prices.

 

1936        Apr 6, A tornado

killed 203 and injures 1,800 in Gainesville, Georgia.

 

1946        Dec 7, A fire

broke out at the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, killing 119 people,

including hotel founder W. Frank Winecoff.

 

1958        Feb 5, A B-47

accidentally dropped an unarmed thermonuclear bomb at the mouth of Georgia’s

Savannah River. It was never found.

 

1962        Sep 25, A Black

church was destroyed by fire in Macon, Georgia.

 

1977        Nov 6, 39 people

were killed when an earthen dam burst, sending a wall of water through Toccoa

Falls Bible College in Georgia.

 

1995        Aug 21, A

commuter plane crashed near Carrollton, Georgia, killing nine people.

 

1998        Apr 4, Two small

planes collided over Marietta and at least 5 people were killed.
