Guest guest
Friday, 31 March 2006, 03:46 GMT 04:46 UK Many die in Bahrain boat disaster Rescue workers and volunteers pulled dozens of bodies ashore More than 50 people are thought to have died after a crowded pleasure boat sank in the Gulf off the coast of Bahrain. At least 63 people were rescued from the al-Dana vessel, which was carrying up to 150 people including foreigners and Bahraini nationals. The two-deck Arabic dhow capsized in calm seas not far from the shoreline during an evening dinner cruise. Britons, South Africans, Egyptians and Filipinos were on board the boat, which eyewitnesses said appeared overcrowded. Bahrain's coastguard service launched an immediate rescue operation, reaching the scene within minutes. American divers and small naval craft from the US 5th Fleet based nearby also joined the rescue efforts. Bahraini officials told local TV stations early on Friday that 53 bodies had been recovered. 'No distress signal' The boat capsized at about 2145 local time (1845 GMT), near one of the bridges linking the capital Manama with al-Muharraq island, Bahrain's coastguard chief Yussef al-Ghatim told AFP news agency. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4862948.stm Dasha: Ju/Sa/Su/Me/Ra satva Jorge Angelino Rua da Sociedade Filarmónica Perpétua Azeitonense, 29 2925-598 Azeitão Portugal jorge.angelino tel: mobile: 210813674 963916784 Add me to your address book...
