Guest guest
Thursday, 16 March 2006, 07:26 GMT Police killed in Papua protest Protesters demanding the closure of a huge gold mine in Indonesia's Papua province have beaten to death two policemen, a police spokesman said. The incident happened on Thursday outside the university in the provincial capital, Jayapura. There have been protests against the mine's operator - US giant Freeport McMoRan - since security forces tried to evict unlicensed miners last month. Supporters of Papua independence see the mine as a symbol of unfair rule. Thursday's demonstration saw police fire tear gas at hundreds of demonstrators, some of whom threw rocks at the police. According to journalists at the scene, the crowd then cornered two policemen and beat them to death with sticks and stones. An Indonesian TV channel reported that the bodies were then burned. The incident was the most serious for several months, and was likely to stoke tensions in the province, which has seen a low-level insurgency against Indonesian rule. The Freeport McMoRan mine - which extracts copper as well as gold - is one of the largest in the world. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4811768.stm Dasha: Ra/Ke/Ra/Me/Sa satva Jorge Angelino Rua da Sociedade Filarmónica Perpétua Azeitonense, 29 2925-598 Azeitão Portugal jorge.angelino tel: mobile: 210813674 963916784 Add me to your address book...
