chart of Denmark effective before 5 June 1953. It is no longer valid, and it was

rectified just for historical reasons (to understand the events in Iceland

before 17 June 1944):

1953 saw further political

reform in Denmark, abolishing the Landsting (the elected upper house), colonial

status for  (The largest island in the world; between the Atlantic and Arctic

Oceans; a self-governing province of Denmark) Greenland and allowing the female

right of succession to the throne with the signing of a new constitution.

1953 – King Frederick signs

into effect a new Danish constitution, under which Greenland and the Faroes

1941        May 26, British

warplane that crashed on a glacier. The four men had taken off from the town's airport in fog on the

morning of May 26, 1941, but 28 miles (45 km) into their journey it crashed

into a mountain.

 

3 German airmen died when

their Junkers 88 was shot down on 18 October 1942, over Þingvellir.

 

At approximately 3:30 p.m.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on May 3, 1943, B-24D (41-23728) crashed at position 22° 19' 30 " west - 63° 54' north in Iceland and was

destroyed. 16 dead.

1943        Aug 28, Denmark

declared a universal strike against Nazi occupiers.

 

1944        Jun 17, Iceland

declares independence.

 

1945        Mar 21, A

British bombing raid was made on Gestapo Headquarters in Denmark to thwart a

planned German arrest of the leadership of the banned Freedom Council. A 2nd

wave of bombers hit a school by mistake killing 86 students and 13 adults.
