Market traders

were setting up when the roof collapsed

 

 

 

At

least 23 people were killed and nearly 30 injured when the snow-covered roof

of a market collapsed in Moscow, Russian officials have said.

Rescuers are racing against time to find at least 10 people

believed to be alive under the rubble at the market in the eastern Bauman

district.

Survivors were reported to be using mobile phones to help guide

rescuers.

Officials believe the early morning disaster may have been

caused by the weight of snow on the roof.

" We are working at full strength all over the territory of

the market, " Yuri Akimov of the emergency situations ministry, said.

" Rescue workers are working underneath the building to save

those still alive, and we are hoping to save the majority of them. "

Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu told reporters at

the scene that those who were trapped under the rubble had been "

knocking and crying out " and using their phones to help rescuers.

Heavy machinery could not be brought to clear the debris because

of the people trapped beneath, he said.

Accident investigation

The accident happened at 0545 (0245

chart for Russia, yet the SAMVA Rectified Countries File cites June

1990 as the chart for Russia, which I have been using for my study

of the Olympic medal standings. If you are using charts rectified

after your SAMVA file posting, would you be so kind as to ensure the

SAMVA file is up to date, so one does not waste time using an

The updated SAMVA Rectified Country Chart file is not yet a final resource.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to download it, keep it as a working document so

that you can update by yourself as the other list members are doing.
