convenes in Tripoli. Emir Idris is designated king of the coming kingdom.

1951 October 7: Promulgation

of the new constitution of Libya.

— December 24: King Idris declares

the independence of the United Kingdom of Libya.

December 24, 1951: Libya's

independance day. The United Nations in a close vote (Haiti's

representitative vote was the only difference) announced that Libya is an

independant state. The people finally got what they fought for and they

celebrated all over Libya.

and Saudi Arabia announced a cease-fire in PLO civil war in Tripoli.

 

King Idris died in exile in

Egypt on the 25th of May 1983

 

1985        Aug 20, Libya

threw out 1000s of Tunisian and Egyptian gas workers.

  

1986          Jan 1, Libyan

leader Moammar Ghadafi threatened to retaliate if attacked as the United States

built its strength in the Mediterranean .

  

1986        Jan 7, US

president Reagan proclaimed economic sanctions against Libya.

 

1986        Jan 23, U.S.

began maneuvers off the Libyan coast.

 

the USA carried out

a military air-and-sea attack on the Gulf of Sirte on 24 March 1986 in which

three aircraft carriers participated.

 

On 25 March 1986 the USA bombarded a

Coast Guard boat. The entire crew - 10 men - died.

 

March 10, 1987 - Tripoli,

Libya; 20 people are killed when paic-stricken fans flee knife-wielding

ruffians and trigger the collapse of a wall.

 

July 14, 1996 - Tripoli,

Libya; A riot at a soccer match involving a team controlled by a son of Libyan

leader Moammar Gadhafi killed or injured up to 50 people.

 

2004        Sep 22, The

European Union agreed in principle to lift an arms embargo on Libya after

pressure from Italy.

  

2004        Oct 10, Libyan

officials said police have arrested 17 non-Libyans suspected of being al-Qaida

members who entered this North African country illegally.

 

2004        Oct 11, The

European Union ended 11 years of sanctions against Libya and eased an arms

embargo to reward the North African country for giving up plans to develop

weapons of mass destruction.

  

2004        Oct 14, German

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder arrived in Libya for an official visit during

which he is to hold talks with Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi.

  

2004        Nov 24,

President Jacques Chirac arrived in Libya in the first ever visit by a French

head of state.
