41 dead in Montenegro train crash

(CNN) -- A passenger train has

derailed and plunged down an embankment outside Montenegro's capital, Podgorica, on

Monday, killing 41 people aboard and injuring more than 180 others, a

government spokeswoman has said.

Fourteen of the 184 people reported hurt were in critical

condition, and 90 children were among the injured, government spokeswoman

Olivera Djukanovic said.

The train was traveling from Bar, on the Adriatic Sea, to Bijelo Polje when it

derailed and skidded 50 meters (yards) down an embankment, she said.

Investigators suspect the train's brakes might have

failed, Djukanovic said.

The derailment took place about about 10 kilometers (6

miles) south of the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, at about 3:30

p.m. (12:30 p.m. GMT).
