Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Share Posted January 4, 2006 Wednesday, 4 January 2006, 12:50 GMT Bomber kills 30 at Iraq funeral At least 30 people were killed and 36 wounded by a suicide bomb attack on a Shia funeral in Miqdadiya, 100km (60 miles) north of Baghdad, officials say. Mortars and automatic weapons were fired at the funeral for the bodyguard of a politician from the prime minister's party, causing chaos. The bomber then blew himself up in the middle of the fleeing mourners as they took cover in the graveyard. Earlier, a convoy of 60 fuel tankers was ambushed north of the capital. At least 18 tankers were destroyed when insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades at the convoy. The attack comes as Iraq grapples with a fuel crisis stemming from the closure of a major refinery in the north that has prompted panic buying of fuel and long queues at petrol stations. The refinery, in the northern town of Baiji, was closed 10 days ago following death threats to tanker drivers.
