The country obtained its

long-awaited freedom after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In a referendum

on Turkmenistan's independence held on October 26,

1991, the absolute majority of the population voted for independent

development. The results of the referendum were announced the following day at

the session of the Supreme Council of Turkmen SSR, when Turkmenistan was

proclaimed an independent democratic state. That date was declared to be

" Independence Day " for Turkmenistan.

A powerful earthquake measuring about 7.5 on the Richter Scale struck western

Turkmenistan late yesterday (Wednesday). The quake struck around 2300 local

time. 11 people were killed and another five were injured.

Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov survived an attempt on his life as he

drove through the capital Ashgabat today. The attack occurred at around 7 a.m.
