Arsonist sets two

fires at Vancouver hospital

An arsonist snuck into

a staff-only hall at St. Paul's

Hospital in Vancouver and set

two separate fires on Christmas Day.

While firefighters

were able to prevent the damage from spreading throughout the hallway, they had

their own problems to contend with -- their firehall was broken into while

they were out on the call.

The fires were started

just before 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning in cardboard boxes on the hospital's fourth

floor. One was lit under a smoke detector, immediately triggering the building's

sprinklers and fire alarm.

The major winter storm

starting to blast Atlantic Canada Monday night blew through southwestern Quebec earlier

in the day.

The storm left

70,000 Quebec homes and businesses without

electricity, some since 6:30

a.m.

According to Hydro

Quebec, the blackout hit the Monteregie agricultural region early Monday morning, leaving towns near

Saint-Hyacinthe and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the dark.

One killed as

bullets fly on Toronto's Yonge St.

Seven people

were shot Monday after two

men sent a brazen hail of gunfire into a busy Boxing Day crowd in downtown

Toronto.

In what appears to be

the worst incident in a year plagued by gun violence, a teenaged girl shopping

with her family died from a shot to her head.

The shootings happened

about 5:15 p.m. near

Yonge and Gould, in the heart of the downtown shopping district, sending many

of the hundreds on the streets ducking for cover.
