5 killed in bus crash on

(CNN) -- A bus carrying Italian

tourists was involved in an accident in Sao Vicente on the Portuguese island of Madeira on Friday,

killing five people and injuring 43, the Funchal Civil Protection Department

said.

Two of those injured are in comas.

Authorities said the driver was arrested.

The Civil Protection Department said the tourist group had

just gotten off an Italian cruise ship and was on a tour of the island. The

accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. (10:15 a.m. ET). Weather conditions at

the time were " excellent, " authorities said.
