Guest guest
Friday, 23 December 2005, 06:57 GMT Dozens dead in China gas blast A gas explosion at a construction site in south-west China has killed at least 42 people. Most of those who died were labourers building a tunnel between Dujiangyan and Wenchuan in Sichuan province, according to the news agency Xinhua. At least 11 other people were injured by the blast, which happened at 1400 (0600 GMT) on Thursday. Officials are still searching for survivors. Reports did not say how many people had been working at the site. Work safety authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. China is known for its lax safety standards, as companies put workers under increasing pressure to keep pace with the country's rapid economic growth. The country's mining industry is particularly notorious for its fatal accidents. There were more than 6,000 deaths in China's coal mines last year. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4554490.stm Dear List Members, Dasha: Me/Sa/Me/Mo/Mo.
