A

magnitude 5.7 earthquake has hit part of central China, killing at least 12 people, state

media reports.

The official Xinhua news agency said the quake hit Jiangxi province at 0849 local time (0049 GMT).

Hundreds of people have been injured and thousands of buildings

were flattened, said officials.

" You could hear windows vibrating, everyone ran out into

the street, " a hotel receptionist in Juijang county told Reuters news

agency.

The epicentre is reported to have been in Ruichang city, near

the border with Hubei province.

Six people were reported dead and 130 were wounded in Ruichang,

according to the official.

Another six people were killed and another 247 were injured in

the nearby county of Juijang, report

authorities there.

Some 130,000 homes were reported damaged in the worst-hit Jiujang

and Ruichang counties.

About 420,000 people were evacuated to safer areas, and tents

were provided to shelter the homeless.
