Helicopters Collide At Speedway

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Less than an hour after

NASCAR's Ford 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway ended, two helicopters

collided, killing one pilot.

According to Miami-Dade police, 24-year-old pilot Johnny Campiglia

was killed when his helicopter lost control, crashing into an unoccupied

recreational vehicle and bursting into flames. Campiglia was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital,

where he later died.

The other helicopter lost a skid, but that pilot was not injured.

Police reports indicate one helicopter was taking off when the

accident occurred, but witnesses said both helicopters were trying to land

inside the speedway shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday when they accidentally

collided.
