Some of the events/facts used in the rectification:

 

" On 4 July Solidarity took its place in the Sejm

as the official opposition. The last communist administration collapsed on 17 August 1989. BBC Radio 4 News

interrupted it evening news at 6:23 PM to announce that General Kitzchak, the prime

minister had resigned. BBC Radio 4 midday news on 18 August was interrupted by the

announcement that President Jaruzelski had asked Solidarity to provide the next

prime minister. "

During the election on June 4, 1989 the Solidarity

group gained 35% of the seats in the Diet. Later President Lech Walesa called

this victory " 35% democracy. " On July 19, 1989 the Parliament

elected general Wojciech Jaruzelski president for the term of six years.

40 years of Communist rule in Poland comes to an end on

August 18. Polish labor leader Lech Walesa visits the U.S. in November and is

given a hero's welcome.

On August 19, President Jaruzelski asked

journalist/Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki to form a government; on

September 12, the Sejm voted approval of Prime Minister Mazowiecki and his

cabinet. For the first time in more than 40 years, Poland had a government

led by non-communists.

1990        Apr 13, The Soviet Union accepted

responsibility for the World War II murders of thousands of imprisoned Polish

officers in the Katyn Forest, a massacre the Soviets had previously

blamed on the Nazis.

 

1990        Nov 4, Douglas Wakiihuri of Kenya and Wanda Panfil of

Poland won the New York

City Marathon.

 

1991        Mar 20, US forgave $2 billion in loans

to Poland.

 

1991        Aug 8, The 2,120-foot 8-inch Radio One

tower in Poland fell down. Radio Warsaw tower Collapses

during renovation works. On August 8, 1991, the mast collapsed

at 16:00

1995        Nov 19, Former Communist Alexander

Kwasniewski won the presidency by a narrow margin over Pres. Walesa with 51.7%

of the vote.

independence after WW I was celebrated and hundreds of skinheads and right-wing

activists staged demonstrations against Jews and foreigners.

 

1997        May 25, Poland adopted a new

constitution to replace the 1952 communist-era charter. It was committed a

market economy, private ownership, personal freedoms and civilian control of

the military.

 

1997        Jun 10, Pope John Paul II bade farewell
