With just 32,000 permanent residents (8,000 of whom are citizens) and 500 acres of territory, it is famous for its high-stakes casino and elegant hotels. In recent years, though, Monaco’s prosperity has increasingly relied on its role as an offshore financial haven. While Monaco is a sovereign state, its independence is somewhat limited, since its big neighbor, France, manages its foreign relations, postal services and defense, while the French franc has served as its official currency. Monaco may be the only state in the world with a symphony orchestra that is larger than its military and police forces. http://www.globalpolicy.org/nations/micro.htm 1297       Jan 7, Francois Grimaldi (Francois the Crafty) disguised himself as a monk and appeared at the fortress on the Rock of Monaco. PrinceCharles III rebelled against Sardinian presence and after the Treaty of Turin, by which Victor Emmanuel II left Savoie to the County of Nice and to France, he signed a treaty with Emperor Napoleon III on 2 February 1861. In this treaty, the Principality of Monaco frees Menton and Roquebrune but obtains the construction of a coastal road whilst accepting the crossing of its territory by the railway. Although no specific mention of such is made, this treaty marks the end of protection and the start of independence. http://burns.dcb.du.edu/history.asp?id=49 Best wishes, satva Jorge Angelino Rua da Sociedade Filarmónica Perpétua Azeitonense, 29 2925-598 Azeitão Portugal jorge.angelino tel: mobile: 210813674 963916784 Add me to your address book...
