On The Prime Importance of Venus, Mars and Pluto in

Relationship Astrology

Thus, May 13, 2004

While I'm on a roll, let me hit you with this...

It isn't long before the student of Astrology learns

of Synastry, the art and practice of considering two

charts for the purposes of marriage and relationship.

This is true no matter what system you study, etc. -

everyone, at one point or another, wants the inside

dope on their love life (In India, they call this

process " matching " , " chart matching " or " marriage

matching " ).

Venus is the universal astrological symbol for love,

romance, and sexuality. Mars is considered the symbol

par excellence of " pure " or " raw " sexuality. And this

has been the case for ages. Until Pluto came along.

Discovered in 1930, right here in the good ole US of

A, Pluto represented Sexuality in ways that Venus or

Mars could not alone; the themes of control, of Life

itself, of deep, deep concerns and depths, were very

strong with Pluto in this regard. Discovered while

still in the Tropical sign of Cancer, Pluto

represented the pre-birth control era, where families

were commonly very large (5 or more children were very

commonplace, compared to our current era)...the idea

of family was very strong, for the purposes of

survival.

Shifting into the Tropical Sign of Leo during the War

years, the generation born with this symbol in their

charts manifested Sexuality in ways that went beyond

mere survival (reproduction), but rather, as a means

to an end in the ways in which sex was seen as

representing one's individual creative expression.

Indeed, it was during this ear that Marilyn Monroe and

" Playboy " magazine became household names by the end

of the 50s and on into the early 60s (and it is so

very interesting to note that, in Monroe's chart,

Pluto=Sun/Moon! Sexuality Personified). Society was

becoming more sexually comfortable with itself. A new

perspective along these lines emerged.

So, we have these three symbols in our modern Western

astrological methodology: Venus, Mars and Pluto. All

of them figure very strongly when it comes to the

question of marriage and relationship.

Some years back, I happened upon a book by the Magi

Society, an organizational network of astrologers

worldwide who conduct and publish their research. The

book, which had to do with the subject of Love and

Money, suggested a simple yet powerful insight: that,

when any two of the three planets - Venus, Mars and/or

Pluto - came into contact with each other in any way

in the chart - the person ends up having a higher than

average interest in, and capacity for, sex. In fact,

the Magis called such alignments " Sexual Aspects " , and

went further into detail in the ways each aspect could

manifest itself in the horoscope. I would urge all

those reading this to check out that book, if they

haven't already. It merits further reading and repays

close study.

In the years since reading that work, I have quietly

observed the chart cases that came accross my desk. I

have noticed something very, very interesting - that,

if one partner has a marked presence of Sexual Aspects

in the chart, but the other partner does NOT, it *can*

suggest the potential for problems down the road in

the relationship/marriage. Studies have indicated

that, in the main, such unions that breakup have at

their core, sexual and/or money issues (and it is very

interesting to note the intrinsic ties that the

planets Venus and Pluto have to the financial realms

as well)...the Indians often say, that marriage often

breaks down in one of two rooms in the house - the

bedroom or the kitchen (Venus=food, Mars=fire/heat to

cook the food, both=sex, LOL). Very interesting.

Of course, there are permutations, exceptions and the

like when considering any of this...but this is a

simple " rule " that is quite telling in actual

practice.

I recently had a couple come in to see me, a young

couple fraught with all manner of problems. One of

them had to do with their miscommunication problems

(the man's Mercury=the woman's Neptune/Pluto midpoint

-uh-oh!!) which lead to their kinda-sorta

breakup...which lead to the man having had sex with

two new women within days of the two " breakups " .

Needless to say, the woman DID NOT like that

situation, yet she played a role in the whole thing

herself with the whole cloudiness of communication on

both sides of the aisle (the man has Neptune " parked "

right outside his 7th house in the 6th; the woman has

Neptune ruling her 7th!).

In the man's chart, Venus opposes Mars - and Mars in

turn conjuncts Jupiter (expanding the sexual focus).

The woman's chart does not feature such a contact -

but, in her midpoint sort, she does have the picture

Mars=Venus/Pluto. All three Sexual Planets " hooked up "

with one another, it should be a " slam dunk " right?

Wrong - this woman had Mars in Virgo in the 12th

house, usually a very difficult placement insofar as

Western astrology is concerned. It almost always

suggests lots of misdirected anger, usually as a

result of some major event in the early homelife.

Here, the Virgo emphasis, both in terms of the Mars

placement and the Asc, speaks to both the

" girl/virgin " themes as well as the potential

" hangups " sexually that this sign is often known for.

Pluto rises in Libra in the Virgo Asc. Venus is in Leo

in the 11th, square Jupiter in Taurus in the 9th and

the Moon in Scorpio in the 3rd.

This woman was sexually molested by an older brother

before she was the age of ten, for some time. It took

her considerable amounts of therapy to " get over it "

(the event itself timed perfectly to the Solar Arc of

Mars to the Asc, Mars ruling the 8th - hmmm!).

Although her Mars aligns with her man's (both having

Mars in Virgo) and therefore her Mars would oppose his

Piscean Venus - and they report having " good sex " -

clearly, his needs in this area are much more

pronounced. Additionally, she reported that she

" didn't enjoy sex " .

The woman has a very difficult time getting past her

man's indiscretions...and with a Saturn's Return on

the way for this lady (natal Saturn in Leo), with

Solar Arc Pluto=Saturn next year as well, and transit

Pluto square the Asc and oppose the MC next year to

top it all off, I have a very hard time seeing this

relationship standing up to the test.

Everyone has seen the Clinton's charts. Bill has the

powerful and rare triple conjunction of Venus, Mars

and Neptune all rising in the Libra Asc. Hillary, on

the other hand, has Venus and Mars " interferred " with

by Saturn. We all know the end of that story.

Both Anais Nin and Vanessa Del Rio, had the rare

occurance of Venus, Mars and Pluto making aspects to

each other in their charts. Again, their lives are a

matter of public record. Nin's married life to

American writer Henry Miller was a shell in every

sense of the word, as she actively sought her sexual

fulfillment in the context of many, many affairs with

both men - and women - and Del Rio, even after having

been in retirement since the latter 1980s, is still

among the first names in the Porn Business.

Again, as anyone who has lived awhile on this planet

can attest to, sex alone, even if " great " , does not a

full relationship or marriage make - but one cannot

deny that it IS a major factor in the overall scheme

of things - unless you just happen to be one of those

people for whom it is just not that much of a

priority.

But if you happen to find yourself - or a couple's

charts you are studying - in such a " mis-match " keep

in mind that one of the ways this can be " smoothed

out " , astrologically, is in the sexual cross-aspects

between the couple, as well as the overall synastry in

general. For me, when I see one having Sexual Aspects

and the other with none or very weak ones, I look for

at least 3 strong cross-aspects in this regard

(keeping in line with the old astrologer's rule of 3).

If they are there, it's an indication, again

astrologically, that the couple *can* work things out.

There's enough interest to keep things going. And of

course, we can never mention the need for

communication enough. The more a couple talks to each

other, and listens to each other, in all areas of life

together, the greater their chances of making it in

the long run.

Salaam,

Mu
