Some of the events/facts used in the rectification:

A condition set by Sweden before entering

into negotiations was that a referendum be held in Norway. This was promptly

carried out and resulted in 382 211 votes for severance and 184

against–perhaps the most overwhelming majority in any referendum held in a

democratic country. In October 1905 agreement was reached in the Swedish town

of Karlstad and on 27 October

the Swedish King formally relinquished the throne of Norway. A demilitarized

zone was established on both sides of the boundary and all matters of dispute

were to be settled in a court of arbitration. The Union, which had been

forced on Norway by military action

90 years earlier, was peacefully dissolved.

http://www.sipri.org/contents/about/sipri/History_introduction.html

In addition, the Storting had requested a prince

from Bernadotte house as a new Norwegian King. Oscar II’s last acts as

King of Norway were recognition of Norway as a fully sovereign state on 26 October and

his proclamation to the Norwegian people on 27 October. Here he relinquished

his right to the Norwegian throne and turned down the Bernadotte offer.

26 October 1905 - Oscar II recognises

Norway as an independent

state separate from the union with Sweden. The union is thus formally ended. On 27

October, Oscar II makes a proclamation to the Norwegian people. He abdicates

the throne and turns down the Bernadotte offer. This is the former King's last message to

the people of Norway.

henceforth divided - realms of the Scandinavian peninsula.

Independence:

7 June 1905 (Norway declared the union with Sweden dissolved); 26 October 1905 (Sweden agreed to the

repeal of the union)

http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/no.html

At length, on June 7, 1905, the Norwegian Storthing

unanimously declared the union with Sweden dissolved and, at the same time, invested

the cabinet of Norway with regent authority to insure the conduct

of government during the crisis. This action was referred to the people through

a special referendum on August 13 of that summer and was approved by the

significant vote of 368,384 to 184. {3} These facts give some idea as to the

status of Norway in the peculiar

dual monarchy and, in addition, set forth some of the striking circumstances

which arose in connection with the peaceful revolution of 1905.

http://www.naha.stolaf.edu/pubs/nas/volume04/vol4_03.htm

Norway declared its independence from Sweden on June 7, 1905 and was recognised

by Sweden as an independent

constitutional monarchy on October 26, 1905 when Oscar II

renounced his claim to the Norwegian throne under the personal union of the kingdom of Sweden-Norway. This event was

quickly followed by Haakon VII's ascension to the Norwegian throne on

November 27 the same year, and was the result of a series of events that almost

led to a Norwegian war of independence against Sweden.
