Guest guest Posted October 24, 2005 Report Share Posted October 24, 2005 Category 3 Wilma makes landfall in southwest Florida Monday, October 24, 2005; Posted: 6:58 a.m. EDT (10:58 GMT) NAPLES, Florida (CNN) -- Hurricane Wilma, a 125-mph Category 3 storm capable of extensive damage, made landfall Monday at near Cape Romano, Florida, the National Hurricane Center said. The NHC's Ed Rappaport warned that the storm's eyewall is capable of a " very high storm surge " with flooding of 9 feet to 17 feet (2.7 to 5.2 meters). The eyewall hit at 6:30 a.m. ET, about 22 miles south of Naples, the center said. Widespread flooding was reported throughout Key West, with damage to residences and businesses.
