NAPLES, Florida (CNN) --

Hurricane Wilma, a 125-mph Category 3 storm capable of extensive damage, made

landfall Monday at near Cape Romano, Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

The NHC's Ed Rappaport warned that the storm's eyewall is capable of a

" very high storm surge " with flooding of 9 feet to 17 feet (2.7 to

5.2 meters).

The eyewall hit at 6:30 a.m. ET, about 22 miles south of Naples, the center said.

Widespread flooding was reported throughout Key West, with damage to

residences and businesses.

Wilma is the seventh hurricane to hit the state in 14

months, and officials said they were concerned that thousands of people had

ignored a mandatory evacuation order in the Florida Keys.
