El 1 de abril de 1838

“Nicaragua convoca a una Asamblea Nacional Constituyente” (page

266). Gives the names of members of the assembly. “El 30 de Abril, la Asamblea

declaró al Estado de Nicaragua, Libre, Soberano e Independiente, sujeto a las restricciones

que se podrían acordar sobre las bases de un nuevo Pacto Federal…El Jefe

de Estado Dr. José Núñez emite un decreto reorganizando administrativamente el nuevo

Estado Independiente de Nicaragua. Se establecen cuatro departamentos a saber:

Oriental, Occidental, Septentrión y Mediodía. El Departamento del Septentrión lo

configuraban las regiones de Segovia, Matagalpa, Chontales y Jinotega”

rompió el Pacto Federal, y su Asamblea Constituyente, nuestra primera, reunida en

Chinandega, declaro que Nicaragua, era libre, soberana e independiente, siendo esa

nuestra “Tercera Independencia” y en cierto sentido la verdadera.

Constituent Assembly formally declared Nicaragua's independence from

the United Provinces of Central America on April 30, 1838.

Las rivalidades e intereses localistas

produjeron serias grietas en la Federación. El primer Estado que rompió con la entidad

gubernamental fue Nicaragua que se declaró libre e independiente el 30 de abril

disarm.

 

1993        Sep 9-14, Hurricane Gert caused 76

deaths.

 

1994        Nov 8-21, Hurricane Gordon caused 1,137

deaths in the Caribbean

 

1996        Feb 7, During a Central America tour, Pope John

Paul the Second received a warm welcome in Nicaragua, his first visit

there since 1983.

 

1996        Jul 7-28, Hurricane Cesar caused 51

deaths in Caribbean and Central America.

 

1998        Mar 13, There was a riverboat accident

on Lake

Nicaragua

that left at least 9 people dead.

 

1998        Oct 25-31, Hurricane Mitch hit the

western Caribbean. Later reports put

the death toll in Honduras to 7,000. In Nicaragua the deaths reached

1,950.

 

1999        Jul 19, Off the Nicaragua coast a lobster

boat with 72 people sank. 64 were rescued and 18 were missing. All 18 were

later recovered. A plane with 16 people was presumed crashed in the Nicaragua jungle.

 

1999        Aug 6, The Cerro Negro volcano spewed

ash from 3 new openings and a maximum state of alert was declared.

 

1999        Oct 3, Flooding in Central America left 10 dead in Nicaragua.

 

2000        Jul 6, A 5.9 earthquake was centered in

Laguna de Apoyo. At least 4 children died.

 

2004        May 5, Nicaragua said its army had

destroyed 333 surface-to-air missiles at the urging of the US and that the

military planned to destroy another 333 SAM-7s in late July.

 

A strong earthquake occurred at 21:26:53 (UTC) on Saturday, October 9, 2004. The magnitude 6.9

event has been located in NEAR THE COAST OF NICARAGUA.
