In exchange for providing military facilities within Transjordan, Britain continued to pay a financial subsidy and supported the Arab Legion. Two months later, on May 25, 1946, the Transjordanian parliament proclaimed Abdullah king, while officially changing the name of the country from the Emirate of Transjordan to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. http://www.kinghussein.gov.jo/his_transjordan.html On the request of the British Government the Council of the League, on 16 September 1922, passed a resolution effectively approving a separate administration for Transjordan. Britain signed a treaty granting independence to Jordan. 1951 Jul 20, Jordan's King Abdullah Ibn Hussein was assassinated in Jerusalem by a Palestinian extremist. 1954 Oct 14, An Israeli act of revenge in Qibiya, Jordan, killed 53. 1955 May 29, Jordan government of Tewfik Abdul Huda resigned. On 13 November 1966, under the pretext of reprisals against the terrorist activity of the (PLO), Israeli forces attacked a Jordanian village of Al- samu. Four Jordanian Hunter aircraft engaged the Israelis and one Hunter went down. 1967 Jun 5, The Six Day War erupted in the Middle East as Israel, convinced an Arab attack was imminent, raided Egyptian military targets. Syria, Jordan and Iraq entered the conflict. Jordan lost the West Bank, an area of 2,270 sq. miles. At dawn on monday, June the 5th 1967, the RJAF began the task of protecting the skies above Jordan. At 0830 the same day, the Israeli Air Force started to bomb airfields in Egypt, destroying the fighting capability of the egyptain air force. At midday; Jordanian Hawker Hunters raided an Israeli Airbase (Natanya) three times without any losses. Soon after, the Israeli Air Force launched a massive attack against RJAF Bases. The RJAF pilots engaged with the attacking Israeli aircraft where three israeli aircraft were claimed to be shot down. During this attack, the Israeli aircraft destroyed some (20) hunters on the ground and one in the air and both Amman and Mafraq airfields were put out of action. 1968 Mar 21, The Israeli army attacked a PLO base in Jordan in response to attacks on northern Israel. 1970 Sep 6, Palestinian guerrillas of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine seized control of three jetliners which were later blown up on the ground in Jordan after the passengers and crews were evacuated. This triggered a civil war in and the expulsion of Palestinians from Jordan. 1970 Sep - King Hussein viewed the hijackings as a direct threat to his authority in Jordan. In response, on September 16 he reaffirmed martial law...During a bitterly fought ten-day civil war, primarily between the PLA and Jordan Arab Army, Syria sent about 200 tanks to aid the fedayeen. On September 17, however, Iraq began a rapid withdrawal of its 12,000-man force stationed near Az Zarqa. The United States Navy dispatched the Sixth Fleet to the eastern Mediterranean, and Israel undertook " precautionary military deployments " to aid Hussein, if necessary, against the guerrilla forces. Under attack from the Jordanian army and in response to outside pressures, the Syrian forces began to withdraw from Jordan on September 24, having lost more than half their armor in fighting with the Jordanians. The fedayeen found themselves on the defensive throughout Jordan and agreed on September 25 to a cease-fire. Israel did not respond. The Black September crises left 2,000 people dead in 13 days of fighting. 1996 Aug 19, King Hussein said 2 days of rioting over higher bread prices was quelled. 1997 Sep 29, It was reported that Jordan shut down 13 weekly newspapers for allegedly failing to maintain assets and cash to $430,000. 1998 Jan 18, Assailants assassinated 8 people in a hilltop villa that included a top Iraqi diplomat 1999 Feb 7, In Jordan King Hussein (63) officially died from Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Abdullah. 2000 Mar 20, Pope John Paul II arrived in Jordan for the beginning of his Holy land tour. 2000 Jul 25, In Jordan a US-made C-130 transport plane crashed and 13 soldiers were killed. 2002 Feb 28, In Amman a bomb killed 2 passersby and destroyed the car of a top anti-terrorism official’s wife. 2003 Aug 7, In Iraq a car bomb shattered a street outside the walled Jordanian Embassy, killed 17 people — including two children. 2005 Aug 19, At least one blast was heard at about 9 a.m. local time (0600GMT) near Aqaba, a Red Sea port 350 kilometers (210 miles) south of the Jordanian capital Amman. 2005 Oct 04, Two Royal Jordanian Air Force planes collided in mid air during training on Tuesday, killing two pilots.
