Some of the events/facts used in the rectification:

Some scholars believe that the name " Maldives " derives from

the Sanskrit maladvipa, meaning

" garland of islands. "

http://workmall.com/wfb2001/maldives/maldives_history_index.html

By an agreement signed at Colombo on 26 July 1965, the UK Government

ceased to be responsible for the international affairs of the Maldive Islands. The exclusion of

the Maldive Islands from Schedule 3 to

the 1965 Order placed, on a statutory basis, the loss of the status of British

protected person by all who possessed it by virtue only of a connection with

the Maldive Islands. The Republic of Maldives was a foreign

country, for nationality purposes, from 27 July 1965 to 10 March 1985 inclusive. On 11 March 1985, it joined the

Commonwealth and was included in Schedule 3 to the British Nationality Act

1981.

Originally the islands were under the suzerainty of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). They came under

British protection in 1887 and were a dependency of the then-colony of Ceylon until 1948. An

independence agreement with Britain was signed July 26, 1965. For centuries a

sultanate, the islands adopted a republican form of government in 1952, but the

sultanate was restored in 1954. In 1968, however, as the result of a

referendum, a republic was again established in the recently independent

country. Ibrahim Nasir, the authoritarian president since 1968, was removed

from office and replaced by the more progressive Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 1978. Gayoom

was elected to a sixth five-year term in 2003.

Agreement that gave the Maldives independence.

Signed on behalf of His Majesty the Sultan by Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan,

Prime Minister and on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen by Sir Micheal Walker

British Ambassador designate to the Maldive Islands. The Ceremony took

place at the British High Commissioner's Residence in Colombo on 26 July 1965.

Maldives came under the British Protectorate in 1887

and was a dependency until 1948, of the then British colony of Ceylon. An independence

agreement with Britain was signed on July 26, 1965, for the creation

of a republic.
