22 September 1960 – Mali Gains Full Independence.

Once the home to a major trans-Saharan empire based

on the trade of salt and gold, this area was colonized by the French in the

1880's. Complete

independence was achieved on 22 September 1960 - after initially

being federated with Senegal from 20 June 1960 to 20 August 1960.

A1, The left wing lifted shortly after touching down on runway 06 due to a

sudden burst of heavy rain and strong winds. The right wing struck the ground,

causing the Boeing to veer off the side of the runway. The right wing separated

after striking a bunker.

22-FEB-1985 Antonov 24 TZ-ACT Air Mali 50 Mali   A1, An

engine failure forced the crew to return to the airport. The aircraft crashed

before being able to reach the airport.

21-JUN-1983 DHC-6 Twin Otter TZ-ACH Air Mali 7 Mali   A1, Crashed.

31-MAY-1981 Falcon 20 7T-VRE Algerian Government 3 Mali   A1, Crashed on

approach/landing during a violent storm.

24-JUL-1971 Douglas DC-3 6V-AAP Air Ivoire 6 Mali  

A1, The DC-3 crashed into a hill during a right turn, 67 seconds after take-off

from runway 24 at night.

 

1998        Jun 26, In the Ivory Coast Alioune Blondin

Beye, a diplomat from Mali, crashed in a small plane near Abidjan.

 

2001        May 23, US Sec. of State Colin Powell

began his 4-nation African tour in Mali and met with Pres. Alfa Omar Konare.

 

2001        Sep 8, Mali helicopter crash kills eight

[Mr. Moussa Sissoko (Chief, Plant Protection Unit and Locust Control, Mali) and

seven others including PV staff in a helicopter crash near Mopti, Mali on 8

September.]

 

2001        Nov 22, Seydou Keida [Keita],

photographer, died in Paris at age 78 or 81.

 

2002        Apr 28, Elections were held for 24

candidates in the presidential race. A run-off for the top 2 was set for May

12.

 

2003        Aug 25, At least 10 people have been

killed in clashes between rival Muslim groups in western Mali.

 

2003        Sep 8, In Mali  authorities said

torrential rains have killed scores and caused heavy property damage, warning

of worse to come if the Niger River spills its banks.

 

2004        Apr 28, Prime Minister Mohamed Ag Amani

resigns and is replaced by Ousmane Issoufi Maiga. Mohamed Ag Amani announced

that he was resigning as prime minister - a post he had held since October

2002.

Wednesday, October 6, 1999 Published at 15:04 GMT 16:04 UK - Mali paralysed by health

strike - Two 48 hour strikes were declared last week and the industrial action

became indefinite on Monday.

 

Friday, August 6, 1999 Published at 16:45 GMT 17:45 UK - Mali hit by floods -

Reports from Mali say at least one-thousand people in the

capital, Bamako, have been made

homeless following days of heavy rainfall. Two people were killed by the floods

which destroyed one-hundred homes.

 

Tuesday, May 11, 1999 Published at 17:36 GMT 18:36 UK - Mali sodliers die in Sierra Leone - Officials in Mali say several of its

soldiers serving in the West African intervention force in Sierra Leone were killed by

Sierra Leonean rebel forces, during fighting around the town of Port Loko last week.
