Guest guest
11 killed in Spanish forest fire From Bureau Chief Al Goodman Sunday, July 17, 2005; Posted: 6:55 p.m. EDT (22:55 GMT) MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A forest fire in Spain has killed at least 11 firefighters whose bodies were discovered late Sunday, more than 24 hours after a weekend barbecue got out of hand and set ablaze a hilly area east of Madrid, a government spokesman in Guadalajara told CNN. Authorities said they fear a total of 14 firefighters may have died, but only 11 bodies had been located at the site of the blaze, near the remote village of Santa Maria del Espino, in Guadalajara province, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Madrid, the spokesman said. The fire remained out of control late Sunday. It started Saturday afternoon in a cave area called Cueva de los Casares, a picnic site where a barbecue sparked a forest fire, the spokesman said. That was less than 10 kilometers (6 miles) from where the bodies of the firefighters were found Sunday. Spain's largest-circulation newspaper, El Pais, reported Sunday that " carelessness " at the barbecue had led to the fire. The government spokesman said those responsible for the barbecue had been identified and located and that some may have been detained. Questions remained about the fatalities. The government spokesman said it was not immediately known if they had sent a distress signal, or whether they were professionals or volunteers. The fire comes as Spain is suffering from one of its cyclical, severe droughts. Water conservation or restriction measures have been put in place across much of the country and reservoirs in some locations are at half-capacity. Thousands of acres of forest and brush land already have burned in various fires in Spain in recent days, but no other deaths had been reported. http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/07/17/spain.wildfires/index.html Dear List Members, Dasha is Ra/Ra/Ke/Mo/Sa.
