Guest guest
Plane crash in Equatorial Guinea kills all aboard Sunday, July 17, 2005; Posted: 8:42 p.m. EDT (00:42 GMT) MALABO, Equatorial Guinea (AP) -- A Russian-made plane believed carrying more than 50 passengers and crew crashed in a forest in Equatorial Guinea, killing all aboard with searchers reporting that some bodies were scattered in trees, officials said Sunday. The Antonov 32 plowed into dense woods 18 miles south of the capital, Malabo, shortly after leaving the city's airport Saturday for the southern town of Bata, government spokesman Alfonso Nsue Mokuy said. " There are no survivors. The plane crashed in the trees and is completely burned, " he said. Wreckage was strewn for hundreds of yards, he said. There was confusion about the number of crew and passengers aboard the plane operated by the Equatorial Guinea-registered company Equatair. Mokuy said the plane was carrying 60 people. But Transport Minister Bametreo Elo Mbong earlier estimated 55 passengers and crew were aboard, but warned the true number might never be known. Flight manifests can often be incomplete in many of Africa's poorest countries, where planes are frequently rickety, Cold War-era castoffs from former Soviet republics. A rescue team including firefighters, soldiers and Red Cross workers arrived at the crash site Sunday, finding the fuselage crumpled and burned and corpses strewn on the ground and in nearby trees. Some of the bodies were burned beyond recognition, the Red Cross said. Equatorial Guinea's capital is on an island off the coast of Cameroon, while many of the other principal cities such as Bata are further south on the West African mainland. http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/africa/07/17/equatorial.guinea.crash.ap/index.html Dear List Members, Dasha is Ju/Ma/Me/Ve/Ra.
