Portugal hit by national strike

 

Public

workers in Portugal have launched a national strike against the new

government's cost-cutting plans.

Strong support came from rubbish collectors, with more than 70%

backing the action, the Local Administration Workers Union (STAL) said.

Hospitals, health centres, ports, public transport and other state

bodies are likely to be hit by the one-day action by about 500,000 workers.

The Socialist government, elected in February, plans to cut public

spending.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates wants to shrink Portugal's budget deficit

back in line with European Union rules by 2008.

He plans to raise value-added tax to 21% from 19% and cut public

spending.

The strike has been called by the " Common Front " of

public worker unions.

Portuguese

police have arrested 47 people on suspicion of distributing child pornography

on the internet.

The investigation, which began more than a year ago, led to

simultaneous raids at houses and businesses across the country.

Police said 200 officers took part in the operation, the biggest

against internet child pornography to have taken place in the country.

Officers seized 58 computers, discs and other computer material,

police said.

" Our investigations led to the identification of a group of

individuals who exchanged large quantities of pictures and films using

peer-to-peer file-sharing networks on the internet, " police said.

The suspects, aged between 16 and 60, could face up to three years

in jail if convicted.
