Blast kills Lebanese journalist

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- A car bomb

exploded in a Christian area of Beirut Thursday, killing a prominent journalist

known for his opposition to Syria's involvement in Lebanon.

The journalist, identified as Samir Kassir, wrote for the

Lebanese daily newspaper An Nahar -- a publication often critical of Syria..

An unidentified woman was wounded in the blast, officials

said.

Speaking to CNN in Atlanta, Kassir's wife -- Al-Arabiya talk show host Gisele Khoury -- said

she is requesting an immediate international investigation and full French

government engagement because her husband held dual Lebanese and French

citizenship.

An Nahar's publisher, Gebran Tueini, blamed Syria for the blast.

" The Syrians have always tried to kill any free voice

in Lebanon -- any free journalist, any free politician in Lebanon, " Tueini said.

" And what's happening today is a continuation in this regime. "

Kassir had said he was being closely monitored by

intelligence services and in his final column sharply criticized Syria's ruling Baath Party for

rejecting opposition views.

But there was no immediate evidence that Syria, which withdrew its

troops from Lebanon in April after a 30-year presence in the country, was behind the

blast.

Opposition leaders also blame Damascus for the February car

bombing that killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, triggering Lebanon's current political

upheaval, but an international investigation into Hariri's killing has not yet

concluded.

Lebanon is in the midst of

parliamentary elections that began May 29 and run through June 19. (Full

The explosion occurred mid-morning in the Ashrafieh

neighborhood of Beirut, setting the car on fire and killing the occupant. Police, who

cordoned off the area around the charred car, said the bomb was placed under

the driver's seat.
