Guest guest
Canada seizes Portuguese trawler Last Updated Mon, 30 May 2005 21:55:31 EDT CBC News ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. - Canada seized a Portuguese trawler and charged its captain for fisheries violations on Monday. Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials intercepted the boat in Canadian waters, about 110 kilometres south of Cape St. Mary's, Newfoundland, spokesman Bob Fagan told CBC News Online. Santa Mafalda arrives in St. John's. (CBC photo: Peter Gullage) Fagan said the captain of the Santa Mafalda was charged with unauthorized entry and fishing in Canadian waters. The charges stem from a May 2003 incident, following which Canada charged the ship's master with unauthorized entry and fishing. Federal authorities said at the time, charges would not be laid as long as the ship stayed out of Canadian waters. Canada can only arrest vessels for overfishing if they are caught inside the 200 nautical mile limit. When Canadian officials seized the vessel on Sunday, it was within the limit. " It was only a few days ago that the Santa Mafalda returned to Canadian waters, " the department said in a statement. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/05/30/trawler0530.html Dear List Members, Dasha is Ju/Ve/Ve/Ju/Me.
