In 1997, the islands of Anjouan and Moheli declared their independence from Comoros. In 1999, military chief Col. AZALI seized power. He pledged to resolve the secessionist crisis through a confederal arrangement named the 2000 Fomboni Accord. In December 2001, voters approved a new constitution and presidential elections took place in the spring of 2002. Each island in the archipelago elected its own president and a new union president was sworn in on 26 May 2002. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/cn.html In 1968 there was a students' strike and in the atmosphere following it, concessions were made by the French government and the first political parties were formed in the country. Some parties urged immediate independence from France; others were for a less-than-total break and there was even one party based in Mahor?Mayotte), the Mouvement Populaire Mahorais (MPM), which opposed independence. From 1971 to 1973 there was great political unrest in the islands. In December 1972 a union of pro-independence parties won 34 seats, while the MPM won only five. The French government submitted a document to the Comorian ministers which was endorsed by them in Paris on 15 July 1973. Under the terms of the document, independence was to be granted after a delay of five years and then only after a referendum on an island-by-island basis. There was considerable resistance to these terms in the islands and when the French Colonial Secretary visited the Comoros in September, he was greeted by hostile demonstrations. In December 1974, a referendum produced a 94.6% vote for independence but in Mahor?Mayotte), there was a 64% vote against independence. Following this on 6 July 1975, Ahmed Abdallah, the leader of one of the major political parties, announced a unilateral declaration of independence. The five deputies, however, from Mahor?Mayotte) rejected independence but nonetheless on 7 July, Ahmed Abdallah was elected head of state and on 18 July, the OAU (Organisation of African Unity) accepted the Comoros' membership Almost as soon as he became leader, Ahmed Abdallah was deposed by Ali Solih, the leader of an opposing political party. This occurred on 3 August 1975 and Ali Solih retained a more or less tenuous hold on the country until a coup, with the help of white mercenaries led by Bob Denard, restored Ahmed Abdallah to power on 13 May 1978. http://www.africatravelling.net/comoros/moroni/moroni_history.htm http://gbgm-umc.org/country_profiles/country_history.cfm?Id=26 http://grad.usask.ca/gateway/archive19.html http://www.comores-online.com/mwezinet/politique/opinions/anjouan/reversing.htm Disaster Date Killed Wind Storm 10-Jan-1983 33 Wind Storm 3-Jan-1987 24 Epidemic 11-Nov-1999 16 Epidemic Feb-1989 3 Wind Storm 14-Feb-1985 2 Volcano 5-Apr-1977 1 Drought 26-Aug-1981 0 Wind Storm 24-Jan-1989 0 Disaster Date Affected Famine 1975 300,000 Wind Storm 3-Jan-1987 50,000 Volcano 16-Apr-2005 39,000 Wind Storm 14-Feb-1985 35,000 Wind Storm 10-Jan-1983 30,052 Volcano 5-Apr-1977 25,000 Epidemic Feb-1989 450 Wind Storm 25-Apr-2003 300 Volcano 3-Jul-1991 200 Epidemic 11-Nov-1999 172 Disaster Date Killed Transport Accident 23-Nov-1996 127 Transport Accident 29-Jul-1996 72 Transport Accident 2-May-1998 41 Transport Accident 29-Oct-2002 16 date type registration operator fat. location pic cat 27-DEC-2002 Let 410 9XR-RB Ocean Airlines 1 Comoros A1 23-NOV-1996, 12:15 UTC, Boeing 767 ET-AIZ Ethiopian Airlines 125 Comoros H1 10-MAR-1981 Breguet Atlantic 29 French Navy 18 Comoros A1 Apr. 17, 2005 - Hundreds flee volcano A volcano is forcing hundreds of villagers to flee in fear of poison gas as the crater spewed ash and flung boulders.
