EDMONTON - A series of explosions ripped through an Edmonton

plant that handles hazardous waste on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of

nearby businesses and raising fears of toxic fumes.

Within a few hours,

firefighters managed to quell the fire at the waste-management facility, which

disposes of PCBs, gas cylinders, flammable liquids and other dangerous substances.

Hundreds of people were

moved out of the area as a precaution. Many said they were worried that they

inhaled toxins as thick clouds of black smoke billowed into the air.

However, Alberta

Environment officials said their tests ruled out any health hazard.

The fire started with a

huge explosion in late afternoon at Custom Environmental Services Ltd., located

in an industrial park on the city's east side.
