Guest guest
By Sher Mohammad Jahish PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok Afghan News) - At least 28 people were killed and more than 70 wounded in a massive explosion in Khenjan district of the northern Baghlan province Monday morning, officials and witnesses said. Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal told Pajhwok Afghan News: " Reports received from provincial police suggest the explosion took place at an arms dump of a former commander Jalal Bajaga in Kohna Deh village. " Mashal added the ministry had sent a team of investigators to the area to probe the cause of the blast. " We will be in a position to give you an exact picture after the investigators submit us a final report, " he continued. But Dilbar Khan, a Khenjan military official, put the toll at 33 dead and 13 injured, saying the bang could be heard in 25-kilometer radius from the village. He insisted the blast was triggered by a fire at explosive material used in road building and stored in a house basement. He believed saboteurs might have set alight the explosive powder stored in the basement of a house belonging to Bajaga's brother. Dilbar's suspicion fell on supporters of Taliban and al-Qaeda network. The deputy commander feared the death toll might go up, in that several bodies remained buried under the debris, but police said Provincial Reconstruction Team officials had launched a rescue operation. Baghlan police chief Fazluddin Ayar, confirming the explosion, said earlier in the day six houses and a mosque had been destroyed. Without conjecturing what caused the blast, he added there were conflicting eyewitness accounts. " We have received contradictory reports from the scene, with one account saying it was either a huge bomb explosion or a possible blast at an arms depot in the region, " Ayar told Pajhwok Afghan News. The house of a local commander Jalal Bajaga, who once led the Army Brigade No. 902 of Khenjan (now disbanded), was extensively damaged by the blast, which took place at 6:00am. Another account which could not be independently confirmed, Bajaga and his family members also suffered injuries in the explosion. http://www.afghannews.net/index.php?action=show & type=news & id=2465 Dear List Members, Dasha is Sa/Ve/Ve/Mo/Ju.
