Rescuers fight against time as Japan rail safety comes under fire

AMAGASAKI, Japan, (AFP) - Rescuers pulled three survivors and more bodies from the wreckage

of a Japanese train as the death toll rose to 73, with a new derailment raising

fresh safety concerns following recent rail privatisation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With hundreds of

residents watching in silent prayer, rescue teams squeezed into flattened

carriages in a last effort to find survivors. Cranes removed train debris

wrapped around an apartment building.

" I thought Japanese

trains were safe. Now I have to think again, " said Junko Iwabe, a

35-year-old housewife in this western industrial town, as she bowed in respect

before the site of Japan's worst train accident

in 42 years.

Just one day after the

tragedy, a carriage of another passenger train derailed in Ibaraki prefecture northeast of

Tokyo,

reinforcing fears although there were no injuries.

MITO — The first car of an 11-car express train derailed

Tuesday after hitting a trailer unit at a crossing near Hatori Station on the

Joban Line in Ibaraki Prefecture, East Japan Railway Co said.

No passengers were

injured in the 12:50 p.m. accident, JR East said. The truck driver sustained minor

injuries, according to the police. The Super Hitachi No. 23 express train bound

for Iwaki Station in Fukushima Prefecture from Tokyo's Ueno Station braked

but ran into the trailer unit which had become stuck on the crossing, according
