Prominent among the first revolutionary leaders was

Antonio Nariño, who took part in the uprising at Bogotá on July 20, 1810. The revolution was

to last nine years before the victory of Simón Bolívar at Boyacá (1819) secured

the independence of Greater Colombia (Span., Gran Colombia).

1810        Jul 20, Colombia declared

independence from Spain.

  

1819        Jan 17, Simon Bolivar the

“liberator” proclaimed Colombia a republic.

  

1819        May 23, Bolivar’s revolutionary

commanders met in the deserted village of Setenta, Venezuela, and planned a

march across the Andes to attack Spanish forces in New Granada (Colombia).

  

1819        Aug 7, South American liberator Simon

Bolivar defeated Spanish forces under Gen. Jose Barreiro in New Granada (Colombia) at the Battle of Boyaca.

The revolutionary army entered Bogota Aug 10.

 

1822        May 24, At Battle of Pichincha, Bolivar

secured the independence of Quito [Ecuador] from Spain. It formed Gran Colombia with Venezuela and Colombia.

 

1830        Dec 17, Simon Bolivar (b.1783), South

American leader for national independence, died of TB in Santa Marta, in Colombia.

 

1899-1902    The civil war known as the War of the

Thousand Days took place in Colombia, beginning in1899

and ending in 1902. Some 100,000 of Colombia's four million people

perished in the conflict, mostly from disease.

 

1948-1958    The period known as “La Violencia.”

Over 200,000 people were killed in massacres by the 2 rival parties, the

Conservatives and the Liberals.

 

1956        Jul 7, Seven Army trucks loaded with

dynamite exploded in middle of Cali, Columbia, killing

1,100-1,200. 2000 buildings were destroyed.

 

August 7, 1956, 7 ammunition trucks explode in Colombia, 1,200 killed 

 

1965        Oct 30, A fireworks explosions killed 50

in Cartagena, Colombia.

 

1968        Aug 22, Pope Paul VI arrived in Bogota, Colombia, for the start of

the first papal visit to Latin America.

 

1983        Mar 31, Earthquake in Colombia killed some 5,000

people.

 

1985        Nov 13, Some 23,000 residents of Armero, Colombia, died when a

mudslide, triggered by the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, buried the city under 30

feet of mud.

 

1994        Jun 6, A 6.0 earthquake and avalanche

destroyed Toez, Colombia. Some 1000 people

were killed.

 

1995        Feb 8, A 6.4 earthquake at Trujillo, Colombia, killed over 46

people.

 

1995        Jun 10, A bomb blamed on drug

traffickers exploded in Medellin, Colombia, killing 26 people.

 

1996        Dec 24, In Bogota, Colombia, at least 37 people

were killed. Mayor Antanas Mockus blamed the violence on alcohol consumption.

 

1997        Feb 2, At least 25 soldiers were killed

and scores wounded in fighting with leftist guerrillas in the mountains east of

Bogota.

 

1997        Jul 22, It was reported that 30,000

violent deaths per year occurred in Colombia, the world’s

most violent country.
