1975  Jul 12, The islands of Sao Tome and

Principe

achieved independence from Portugal.

 

1991  Mar 3, Miguel Trovoada was installed as

President of Sao Tomé e Principal. The former prime minister had returned from

exile to run for president.

 

1996  Jun 30, Voters went 41% for incumbent Miguel Trovoada

and 39% for former Marxist ruler Manuel Pinto da Costa. A runoff was scheduled

for Jul 21.

 

2003  Jul 16, In Sao Tome, an island nation

off West

Africa,

Pres. Fradique de Menezes was ousted in a coup led by army Maj. Fernando

Pereira. The revolt changed control of the impoverished country's new oil wealth.

 

2003  Jul 21, In Sao Tome military coup

leaders freed seven government ministers detained in last week's bloodless

rebellion and resumed talks with international mediators on restoring civilian

rule.

 

2003  Jul 23, In Sao Tome rebel leaders ended

a weeklong bloodless coup after the president signed an accord promising to

replace the government and give them amnesty.

 

2003  Aug 1, In Sao Tome PM Maria das Neves

resigned. Four other government ministers also have offered to resign.

 

Entre 1987 e 1997, São Tomé

e Príncipe viveu uma crise económica e financeira, caracterizada por

desequilíbrios macro-económicos, descida de rendimento per capita, subida da

taxa de inflação e aumento da dívida pública externa. A queda acentuada e

progressiva das exportações de cacau, principal receita do país, tornou

necessário um reajustamento da economia são-tomense.

 

1995 15 de Agosto: Tentativa

de Golpe de Estado.

 

2001-06-21: Portugal assina

acordo de cooperação.

2005-01-07: São Tomé -

Portugal e São Tomé e Príncipe assinaram, sexta-feira, um protocolo de

cooperação no domínio da comunicação social avaliado em 350 mil euros,

 

13-01-2005: As autoridades

de São Tomé e Príncipe admitem uma redução considerável de produção agrícola

nos próximos anos, como consequência da «bruma seca» que invadiu, há oito dias

o arquipélago.
