Light-skinned Moors dominated the government under Pres. Maaouya Sid’Ahmed Ould Taya. 1998 Jan 24, Pres. Maaouya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya met with Yasser Arafat in Nouakchott. 1999 Oct 28, Mauritania established full diplomatic relations with Israel. 2000 Oct, The government banned the opposition Union of Democratic Forces. 2000 Dec, The government arrested opposition leader Ahmed Ould Daddah.
