Guyana's history is replete with battles fought and lost, as the Dutch, as well as the British, French and Spanish tried for centuries to control this land. Covered with rivers and a massive rainforest, it's a rugged, unspoiled country, with over 90% of its population living along the coastal areas. Guyana gained independence from the UK in 1966 and is South America's only English speaking country. Today, with its state-controlled past left behind, it's moving into a free market system and a brighter, independent future. http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/samerica/gy.htm Some of the events used in the rectification: Disaster Date Killed Slides 19-Apr-2000 10 Flood Jul-1971 0 Drought 1988 0 Flood Jan-1989 0 Flood Jul-1996 0 Drought 26-Mar-1998 0 Disaster Date Affected Drought 26-Mar-1998 607,200 Flood Jul-1996 38,000 Flood Jul-1971 21,000 Drought 1988 0 Flood Jan-1989 0 Slides 19-Apr-2000 0 Disaster Date Killed Misc Accident 18-Nov-1978 900 Misc Accident 1-Dec-1979 1 Misc Accident Apr-1978 0 Misc Accident 1988 0 Industrial Accident 22-Aug-1995 0 Disaster Date Affected Misc Accident Apr-1978 250,000 Misc Accident 1988 281 Misc Accident 1-Dec-1979 200 Industrial Accident 22-Aug-1995 200 Misc Accident 18-Nov-1978 0 date type reg. operator fat. location kind 08-NOV-2003 Shorts Skyvan 8R-GMC Trans Guyana Airways 2 Guyana A1 22-JAN-1981 Shorts Skyvan 8R-GFF Guyana CAA 4 Guyana A1 03-DEC-1973 DHC-6 Twin Otter 8R-GCP Guyana Airways 3 Guyana A1 01-JAN-1944 Curtiss C-46 41-24702 USAAF 0 Guyana U1 1966 Guyana became independent under a Geneva Agreement.
