About 100 are inhabited, while the balance remain nature preserves. First settled by Polynesians, the Fiji islands were sort of discovered in 1643 by Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer. In 1774, even Captain Cook anchored here, but it was Captain William Bligh of (Mutiny on the Bounty) fame that finally made them famous. In 1874 Fiji became a British Colony. It gained its independence in 1970, after nearly a century of British control. The majority of Fiji is mountainous (volcanic in origin) with several peaks exceeding 3000 ft. The balance of the smaller islands are a mixture of coral and limestone. Barrier reefs ring most islands. Tourism dollars are Fiji's main source of income, followed by the sugar and garment industries. It's also rich in gold, coconut oil, seafood and lumber. The exotic islands of Fiji are one of Oceania's most popular destinations. http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/oceania/fj.htm THE FIJI INDEPENDENCE ORDER 1970 http://www.ccf.org.fj/publications/constitutions/1970/01x3.shtml Some of the events used in the rectification: Top 10 Natural Disasters in Fiji sorted by numbers of people killed and affected Disaster Date Killed Wind Storm 9-Dec-1973 59 Wind Storm 27-Mar-1979 53 Wind Storm 17-Jan-1985 28 Wind Storm 10-Mar-1997 25 Wind Storm 2-Jan-1993 21 Flood 12-Apr-1986 19 Wind Storm 24-Mar-1980 18 Wind Storm 14-Jan-2003 17 Disaster Date Affected Drought 4-Sep-1998 263,455 Flood 12-Apr-1986 215,000 Wind Storm 1-Mar-1983 200,014 Wind Storm 2-Jan-1993 160,003 Wind Storm 24-Oct-1972 120,000 Wind Storm 17-Jan-1985 100,000 Wind Storm 27-Mar-1979 35,900 Wind Storm 24-Mar-1980 35,250 Drought 1983 31,000 Wind Storm 14-Jan-2003 30,000 Disaster Date Killed Transport Accident 24-Jul-1999 17 date type registration operator fat. location pic cat 11-DEC-1965 DH-114 Heron VQ-FAL Fiji Airways 0 Fiji A1 09-NOV-1966 DH-114 Heron VQ-FAX Fiji Airways 0 Fiji U1 11-SEP-1986 DH-114 Heron DQ-FEC Fiji Air 1 Fiji A1 27-DEC-1986 DH-114 Heron DQ-FEF Sunflower Airlines 11 Fiji A1 09-MAR-1991 Boeing 767 ZK-NBC Air New Zealand 0 Fiji A2 15-DEC-1991 DH-114 Heron DQ-FEE Fiji Air 0 Fiji A1 24-JUL-1999 Embraer 110 DQ-AFN Air Fiji 17 Fiji A1 1970 Oct 10, The South Pacific island of Fiji became independent after nearly a century of British rule.
