Guest guest
Dear Thor and list, As it happened with Canada and UK, Australia’s birth time, January 01, 1901, 12:00AM, Melbourne, which was the capital at that time, was duly enacted by the article #3 of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 (UK) and the subsequent proclamation of Queen Victoria: [CH. 12.] Commonwealth of Australia [63 & 64 VICT.] Constitution Act. 3. It shall be lawful for the Queen, with the advice of the Privy Council, to declare by proclamation that, on and after a day therein appointed, not being later than one year after the passing of this Act, the people of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania, and also, if Her Majesty is satisfied that the people of Western Australia have agreed thereto, of Western Australia, shall be united in a Federal Commonwealth under the name of the Commonwealth of Australia. But the Queen may, at any time after the proclamation, appoint a Governor-General for the Commonwealth. Proclamation of Commonwealth. EVENTS TO TEST/UNDERSTAND THE CHART: Events from an email sent by Mr. Neville Lang to the SAMVA list: - Neville Lang SAMVA Monday, December 29, 2003 2:03 PM Proposed Chart for Australia, after review .... Events Used (Chronological order) * Queen Victoria dies: 22 Jan 1901, (12 noon), Canberra ** For most of the 20th century Australians, in general, were very close to the British monarchy and so the deaths of the monarch hit hard on the people. These days, I feel that we a much less closer to the monarch than we once were. * World War I - Australian army recruitment began: 10 Aug 1914, (12 noon), Canberra * World War I Armistice announced: 11 Nov 1918, (12 noon), Canberra * Swimmer 'Boy' Charlton highly successful at the Paris Olympics: 16 Jul 1924, (12 noon), Canberra * Australia's champion racehorse 'Phar Lap' dies in USA: 5 Apr 1932, (12 noon), Canberra ** During the depression, Australians loved their champions. There was much controversy at the time on how the horse died and it was rumoured that he was poisoned. I'd like to draw another parallel as the USA also had their champion racehorse 'Seabiscuit' of about the same era. * NSW state Premier Jack Lang dismissed from office: 13 May 1932 (12 noon), Sydney ** The lead up to this crisis almost led to a civil war between the Federal government and the State government. Threats were made that the State governor would be arrested while the Federal government warned that the army would be called in to take over the state. Premier Jack Lang refused to go after the governor dismissed him but the party forced him to go. As a matter of interest, Jack Lang is related to me somewhere in my family tree. * Australia regains the 'Ashes' from England: 23 Aug 1934, (12 noon), Canberra ** This was a champion cricket team of the time captained by Donald Bradman. Australia and England have always been rivals at cricket. The 'Ashes' is a test series only played England and Australia. * King George V dies: 21 Jan 1936, (12 noon), Canberra * City of Darwin devastated by Cyclone (Hurricane): 11 Mar 1937, (12 noon), Canberra * Prime Minister (PM) Joe Lyons dies in office: 7 Apr 1939, (12 noon), Canberra * World War II - Australia declared war with Britain: 3 Sep 1939, (12 noon), Canberra * Japan Bombed Darwin, 100s died: 19 Feb 1942, (12 noon), Canberra * Two Japanese midget submarines entered Sydney Harbour sinking some civilian shipping: 31 May 1942, (12 noon), Sydney * PM John Curtin dies in office: 5 Jul 1945, announced to public at 6:00am, Canberra ** Interestingly, our wartime PM died not that long after the US President Roosevelt died so there was a slight parallel here too. * World War II - Peace declared 15 Aug 1945, (12 noon), Canberra ** During WWII, Australia's reliance on Britain to help changed. After the fall of Singapore, Australia was largely left to defend itself against the Japanese. Britain was tied up with defending itself and fighting in Europe. History indicates that we were very close to being occupied by the Japanese. I read where Japanese currency with Australia overprinted were found by our troops after some raging battles. Strong help came from the USA in fending off the Japanese forces during the Coral Sea battle. I would suggest that since that time, we have kept very close ties to the USA in defence matters. * King George VI dies: 6 Feb 1952, (12 noon), Canberra ** The present Queen Elizabeth II ascends the throne * Queen Elizabeth II arrives for the first in Australia: 3 Feb 1954, 10:42am, Sydney * Olympic Games held in Melbourne: 22 Nov 1956, (12 noon), Melbourne * Compulsory National Military Service introduced: 10 Nov 1964, (12 noon), Canberra * The decision to send troops to Vietnam announced: 29 Apr 1965, (12 noon), Canberra * PM Harold Holt missing while swimming in ocean, presumed drowned: 17 Dec 1967, 11:30am, Melbourne * PM Gough Whitlam sworn in: 5 Dec 1972, 11:30am, Canberra ** The election of the Labor party was a sweeping change after 23 years of conservative government. * City of Darwin devastated by Cyclone Tracy: 25 Dec 1974, (12 noon), Darwin * Labor Government dismissed from office by the Governor General: 11 Nov 1975, 1:00pm, Canberra ** This period was a major constitutional crisis in Australia as the PM could have dismissed the Governor General (GG) first. However, the GG representing the Queen also has the right to dismiss the government in power and so this the first (and only) time this has happened. There were many marches and demonstrations in the streets of the cities after the dismissal - a major crisis at that time in Australia. There were rumours that the GG could bring in the military to remove the Government and its ministers from the parliament if they did not leave but this did not eventuate. * Australia's Worst Train Crash (Granville, Sydney): 18 Jan 1977, 8:12am, Sydney * Australia's first Terrorism bombing: 13 Feb 1978, 12:40am (00:40), Sydney ** A large bomb exploded outside the Sydney Hilton hotel where a meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government took place. There were many leaders from other countries in the hotel at the time but luckily none of these were hurt. However, a number of deaths did occur on the outside of the building. * The Azaria Chamberlain baby was taken by a Dingo (dog): 17 Aug 1980, 8:00pm, Ayers Rock (now Uluru) near Alice Springs ** This held media attention for many months and some years as the case when to various courts. There was suspicious circumstances at the time * The racing yacht 'Australia II' wins the America's Cup: 27 Sep 1983, (12 noon), Canberra ** This was the first time in over 100 years that the America's Cup in yachting had left the shores of the USA. Australia took great pride in 'yanking' it from the yanks. * Australia's new Parliament House opened during our Bicentenary year: 9 May 1988, (12 noon), Canberra * Sydney chosen to host the 2000 Olympics: 24 Sep 1993, (12 noon), Canberra * Major Insurance Company HIH Collapse: 15 Mar 2002, (12 noon), Sydney ** Like the USA, this began a series of major corporate collapses * Australia's worst ever Terrorist Bombing: 12 Oct 2002, 11:00pm, Bali ** Of the 183 people that were killed in Bali, most of them were Australians. This bombing came just a year after the USA suffered September 11 and in the period that is now called the 'War on Terror'. * Canberra Bushfires: 18 Jan 2003, 4:00pm, Canberra ** There were remote fears that these major bushfires would reach the Parliament building. However, this did not happen but these fires devastated large areas of the Canberra suburbs. * PM Howard Committed Troops to Iraq, ahead of Iraq war: 18 Mar 2003, 10:30am, Canberra * Won Cricket's World Cup: 23 Mar 2003, 10:00am, Johannesburg, South Africa * Governor General Sex Scandal Crisis: 1 May 2003, (12 noon), Canberra ** This crisis ultimately led to the resignation of the Governor General and a new appointment by PM Howard Trial Australian Charts 1. Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act, passed by the British parliament, signed by the Queen. 9 Jul 1900, (12 noon), London (time of signing by the Queen unknown) ** While this act was signed, Western Australia had not yet voted to be part of the Federal system at that time 2. Western Australia votes Yes to be part of the federal system 31 Jul 1900, 7:00pm, Perth 115E50 31S56 TZ=8 hours, DST=0, Asc = 3*00' Aquarius ** This was the time that voting closed 3. Queen Victoria proclaims that on and after 1 Jan 1901, the six colonies " shall be united in a Federal Commonwealth under the name of the Commonwealth of Australia " . 17 Sep 1900, (12 noon), London ** This is the Proclamation that was subsequently read out in the Sydney ceremony at Centennial Park on 1 Jan 1901 4. Australia (currently used on SAMVA) 1 Jan 1901, 12:00am (midnight), Melbourne 145E00 37S50 TZ=10hours, DST=0, Asc = 14*58' Virgo 5. Australia (according to Alan Leo.
