Hi Again Mark, All,

This is another piece I wrote on Sade Sati.

Demystifying Sade Sati: Commonsense Remedial Methods for a New Age

Sat, Mar 6, 2004

Over the past few months and years, I have been asked about and have

written extensively on the phenomenon known as Sade Sati, the 7.5

year long transit over the Moon and the two signs that flank it on

either side. While the interested can check out my eariler writings

on this principle, I will just say here that generally, it portends a

difficult time for the native in all areas of life for the duration

of that transit. In this article, I hope to go deeper into Sade Sati,

as well as to give what I have found and seen to work in terms of

ameliorating this difficult period in all our lives.

Firstly, Sade Sati does not, and will not operate in precisely the

same way for everyone. This is because everyone has different charts,

with different Moon and Saturn sign placements, which is key when

considering the depth of Sade Sati in a horoscope. People with the

Moon in Taurus and Saturn in Capricorn, for example, all things being

equal, aren't going to have as rough a time than a person with Saturn

in Aries and the Moon in deep debilitation in Scorpio! Additionally,

a person with either the Moon or Saturn strong in the Navamsa, or the

rest of the Varga charts, or strong in the Shad Bala, etc., again,

has the better chance or warding off the " evils " of Sade Sati.

Always, always, always, keep in mind that Jyotish recognizes that

there is ALWAYS an exception for every " rule " , and that we should be

most circumspect when we consider this well known, but very little

understood transit.

Perhpas the single best way to access the potential of Sade Sati in

the horoscope of an individual, is in carefully examining the Dasas

the person is running at that time. A person who is running the Dasa

of a Yogakaraka planet, or a planet that participates in a major Raja

Yoga configuration, will have a much less difficult time of Sade Sati

than someone who is running a very difficult Dasa, say, the lord of

the 8th house, or the lord of the 12th. So, inspecting the Dasas

first and foremost is always the best way to go.

Yet, there are instances and times when the Sade Sati can, through

the sheer force of its indications both in the natal chart and in

terms of Saturn's position in the sky (in relation to the house he

travels through in the chart), where it can bring about the much

feared difficulties and losses in the life of a person. Clearly, when

the Moon is in the 12th House from the Ascendant, or in the 2nd

House, these are times when Sade Sati can potentially be especially

tough, because that means that Saturn would be transiting both the

Moon and the Lagna signs, giving what I like to call a " double

whammy " Sade Sati. Other " caveats " can be seen in noting whether the

Moon is placed in the 6th or 8th Houses, more zones of inherent

difficulty. Again, not enough can be stated about Saturn's position

natally in the chart. It really can make a huge difference.

Just two brief examples of what I mean - my other half has the Moon

and Saturn in Capricorn in the 8th House. When Saturn transited this

point in her chart in the late 1980s, she was having the best time of

her life - ALL areas where a great time of rise in her life. She

first got a dream job, then she was promoted and given all kinds of

raises, then she acquired a pet that she liked very much, then she

went back to school and eventually graduated with degrees, got a new

car, got all sorts of material goods like clothes and expensive

perfume, you name it. No one in her family died, she did not have any

financial difficulty at all, no illness, nothing but good came into

her life. Why? Well, aside from the aforementioned positions of the

Moon and Saturn, she also had the Dasa of Saturn running, which was

well placed anyway. For a Gemini Lagna, Saturn's strongest House is

the 9th - and since the 9th House is the Bhagya Sthana (House of

Luck, or Gifts) and the House of Higher Education, we see why Sade

Sati for her was not so difficult.

On the other hand, I have a very good and close friend, who has

Saturn natally in the 7th House, in Aries. Additionally, this same

Saturn is very, very weakened, not only in the Navamsa, but also

throughout the entire Varga chart summary. He has been running Saturn

Dasa for some time now, and last year, Sade Sati had begun to his

Cancer Moon in the 10th House. Last year, both his father and boss

died (Saturn going through the 9th, the father, in the 12th from the

10th, the boss), and his mother is in the hospital being tested for

what could be cancer (Moon in the sign of the mother, Cancer, the

disease cancer, Saturn about to enter the Moon sign in the Fall

of '04). On top of all that, my friend may no longer have his job

come the end of the year, due to funding difficulties because his job

is dependent upon getting grants from the government. So, we see two

cases where Sade Sati was in operation at the same time that a Saturn

Dasa was running, and we see the results.

But there are ways in which one can take the " sting " out of Sade

Sati. I will list a few of the things I have seen to work.

First of all, since the whole idea behind Sade Sati is " losses " you

want to " beat Sani to the punch " by intentionally " losing " things

yourself. If you have anything in your home that is old, worn out,

broken and the like, give it away to others, or just throw it in the

trash. Clean out your closets, junk drawers, mailboxes, basements and

attics, anything and anywhere that needs to be cleaned out, do it.

Since Saturn represents decay, it is difficult for decay to occur in

a clear, clean environment.

Second, do the same to your body - get enemas, colonics, and

generally cleanse your system of any and all impurities. One thing

you can do, and it doesn't cost anything, is to fast on Saturdays,

the day of Saturn. Fast from sun-up to sundown, taking no food or

drink. Prepare yourself to do this on Friday night, if you have to.

Take the food and drink money you were going to consume, and give it

to those who need it, especially people who Saturn represents: the

homeless, the elderly, the sick and infirm. Giving charity is an

excellent way to alleviate any tensions the more difficult transits

and progressions the planets may indicate.

Thirdly, donate your time on Saturday towards doing things for others

at no cost at all to them, and for which you do not get paid for.

Doing austerities and penances is another very good way to deal wit

Saturn's difficult periods. Since the Moon and Saturn is involved,

work in a homeless shelter, or a shelter for battered women and

children. Working in the Thrift Store, another Saturnian place, is

good. Anyplace where people are sick and needy, is the place to be,

every Saturday, for at least a few hours.

Lastly, and this is for those really extreme cases of Sade Sati - get

counseling. Be it religious or psychological, counseling can be very,

very helpful to those who have very difficult Moon positions to begin

with, and Sade Sati is really bringing up and churning up all those

feelings of hurt, abandonment, pain and depression from the past,

possibly hacing to do with either the mother or father, or both. This

will reallly be all the more apparent, if the person concerned is

born at night while at the same time, the Moon or Saturn or both is

in a difficult position in the chart. Being with someone you trust in

a counseling situation will go a long towards you seeing things from

a balanced perspective; you're no longer alone; and you can slowly

work yourself back into a good healthy and positive self image. I

have seen many people seek counseling during times of Sade Sati.

No matter what the situation though, even for those for whom Sade

Sati is no issue at all - it is a time when maturation of a

significant kind comes about, usually, but not always, as a result of

a series of profound losses in their life. The resultant losses gives

one a clearer insight on what is truly important in life. This is why

in Vedic philosophy, Saturn represents the planet of Spirituality,

because it represents the Ultimate Reality - what is real, and what

is not. Therefore, Saturn shows us all what is truly important in

this world. Being " stripped down " by Saturn is a very good in this

regard, and is the basis of true Spirituality. All of the world's

great Prophets - Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Krishna, Moses - all of

them had limited interest in the dealings of the material world in

the way that the everyday man or woman did. They strove to seek the

Ultimate Truth of existence, and it would not be surprising that if

we could see their charts, Saturn would be very strong. So, Sade Sati

has its very profound spiritual side, for those who would choose to

use it in this way.

I'm hopeful that I've taken some of the fear and loathing out of Sade

Sati, and instead recast his transit as a time of maturation,

profoundity, and spiritual growth and development.

Salaam,

Mu
