Guest guest
Analysis of NOW's Horoscope 7:17 AM 2/12/05 Sat Hi All, In light of the recent discussion, I thought to introduce an analysis of the astrology of NOW, the National Organization for Women. It never occured to me to take a look at its foundation chart until the other night when I ran a search for it on Google. The data is taken from the official site for NOW (now.org): NOW Jun 30 1966 Washington DC *set for Noon; Plac 22 Vir 57 The chart is very, very interesting, and fits NOW's reality beautifully: note that the Uranus-Pluto conjunction is very close to the Asc, at 16 degrees, both of them. As mentioned here and elsewhere, this conjunction occured at a critical time for the USA. This was the birth of the " second wave " of the Women's Movement, far more radical than the first, I think its fair to say. The following is from the NOW website front page: " The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has 500,000 contributing members and 550 chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since its founding in 1966, NOW's goal has been " to take action " to bring about equality for all women. Both the actions NOW takes and its position on the issues are often unorthodox, uncompromising and ahead of their time. NOW's actions have established the organization as a major force in the sweeping changes that put more women in political posts; increased educational, employment and business opportunities for women; and enacted tougher laws against violence, harassment and discrimination. NOW's official priorities are winning economic equality and securing it with an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will guarantee equal rights for women; championing abortion rights, reproductive freedom and other women's health issues; opposing racism and fighting bigotry against lesbians and gays; and ending violence against women. " I think that says it all, and again is reflected in its chart. Note the Moon in Sagittarius, always about affecting thought, presenting opinion and having it respected, squaring the Uranus-Pluto conjunction, from the 3rd House of communications, mindset, ideology (along with the 9th), " selling a point " . This is promotion, all day. The Moon disposes of the Sun-Jupiter conjunction in Cancer at the top of the chart, in the 10th House (women's issues, political interests and aims, etc), and note that Mars is exactly on the MC in Gemini - and that it is totally unaspected (I use a tight 5 degree orb for my aspects for the general planets, 6 for the Lights); its symbolism, espcially in Gemini, should go without saying. Argumentative, to say the least; thought-provoking at best. It's a decidely " masculine " energy at work, in one of the classic " gender bender " Signs of the Zodiac, Gemini. Note too how it rules the 8th House - clearly, this represents Abortion, perhaps NOW's single biggest legal and social achievement. Mercury is both the chart ruler, since its Sign Virgo (who's glyph is that of a young woman) is on the Asc and ruler of the 10th House of honor, public reputation and achievement. It's placed in the organizational 11th House, in Leo, a potentially haughty, holier-than-thou placement; at the very least, because it's in the Sun's natural Sign, it suggests a certain subjectivity focus. Then, note that this Mercury is sextile Venus, a rather uncommon aspect, and the two planets coming together by aspect suggests more subjectivity, now with a hint of idealism coming into the picture. There is a picture forming here of what " could be " , what " should be " . Now, checkout Neptune in the 3rd - sextile the Asc, Uranus-Pluto, and quindecile Venus (which happens to be in Gemini, cementing its tie to Mercury even more) in the 9th - obsession with idealism, great potential for being deluded - and put this together with all of the above - and the chart image emerges definitely as an organization that is seriously ideological - and radical. Finally, to round out our basic analysis of the NOW chart, note that Saturn is in the 7th, and, if you're into Chiron, it closely conjuncts it as well, also in the 7th. This is the signature that reflects NOW's position with respect to marriage and women's role in it - the major movers and shakers of NOW at the time (and to a certain extent today) considered marriage to be a woman's doom, and saw divorce as something of a rite of passage for women (in fact, NOW's first chairwoman and founding member, Betty Friedan, was divorced around the time of NOW's official founding in 66; Gloria Steinem, considered by many the living embodiment of the modern day feminist movement, also had several marriages from which she divorced). Saturn-Chiron conjunctions...just the image of them in your brain, infers pain. Think about it - what do you think the relationship/marital life of a person (in this case, woman) would be if you she handed you her chart and saw Saturn conjunct Chiron in the 7th and in Pisces??? At the very least you would raise an eyebrow, right? C'mon you wouldn't be an astrologer worth your salt if you didn't. Therefore, NOW's stance regarding marriage makes perfect sense and is no surprise at all. That Saturn is also at the Aries Point brings all of this forward, and again, look at NOW's history and some of its major players, and the results speak for themselves (and we have to say that Saturn's rulership of the 5th also speaks loud and long to NOW's abortion-rights stance, conjunct Chiron - " wounding " children? Note that the rulers of the 5th and 8th Houses, Mars and Saturn - classically the Great Malefics of Astrology - are angular). Betty Friedan was born Feb 4 1921 4am CST Peoria IL; Plac 23 Sag 16 Rodden AA. She founded NOW in 66, and was divorced by 69 (NOW foundation and 1st chairwomanship, transit Jupiter conjunct the Moon and opposed Pluto in the 1-7 axis, transit Saturn square the Asc, ruling the 2nd House of Prestige; for her divorce from a long-standing marriage, transit Pluto squaring the Asc, having come from the 7th where it is natally; transit Uranus square the Moon. Note the Moon-Pluto opposition in the 1-7 Can/Cap axis...hmm...). The ties between her chart and that of NOW are considerable. Gloria Steinem was born Mar 25 1934 10pm EST Toledo OH; Plac 12 Sco 23 Rodden AA. Venus conjunct Saturn with Venus ruling the 7th at the nadir of the chart, both in Aquarius; MC=Venus/Saturn. Hmm... What's interesting to note in both ladies' charts is the hard Moon-Venus aspects; in Friedan's case Moon squares Venus, in Steinem's the Moon quindeciles Venus. This suggests a certain narcissism about oneself. Note too that in the NOW foundational horoscope, the Moon and Venus are accross from each other...not what I would normally consider a tight opposition...they're almost 8 degrees away " natally " ...but still...hmm...very interesting. Some of you may recall the recent article I wrote about Roe v. Wade. In it I presented the chart of the date the actual decision, Roe v. Wade, came down. Of all of NOW's goals, this has to be its crowning achievement, and every year, they mobilize thousands of women accross the county to lobby publicly for it remaining in place. How much you wanna bet that the RVW chart has tight ties to that of NOW? How much? Well, save your money (I'm not a betting man), but checkout the astrology for yourself (Roe v. Wade, Jan 22, 1973, Noon, Washington DC; Plac 16 Tau 24): RVW's Moon sits right on NOW's Asc; its Asc opposes NOW's Neptune; its Mars-Saturn axis falls on NOW's Moon and squares NOW's Uranus-Pluto; its Sun opposes NOW's Mercury; its Neptune opposes NOW's Venus; its Venus opposes NOW's Sun-Jupiter; and its Jupiter exactly trine NOW's Asc. Furthermore, if you checkout NOW's measurements for the time, SA Uranus and Pluto were closing in on exact conjunction with the Asc at the time Roe v. Wade came down. Impressive, and this, along with the basic analysis, suggests that the noon mark may indeed by accurate. I also said in my RVW article, that it looked like it was a certainty that it was going to change, radically, between Fall 05 and Spring 08; looking at NOW's measurements for the same time period, it looks like the organization is under serious " attack " and the battleground no doubt WILL be Abortion. In July 2006, the following Solar Arc pictures become exact: 1. SA Mars=Pluto 2. SA Mars=Uranus/Pluto 3. SA Mars=Uranus Keep in mind, Mars is very pronounced in the NOW foundation chart and rules the 8th. Additionally in 2006, transit Uranus will square its own natal position and Pluto from the 6th and transit Saturn (later in the year; keep in mind, Saturn rules the 5th) will square Neptune, while transit Neptune will square its own natal position from the 5th; transit Pluto at the SUN/MOON MIDPOINT. This is upheaval, reversal, power struggle, weakening, all day here. As indicated earlier, July is the flashpoint but the transits are operative all that year. Its also very interesting that NOW was founded in 66 and this all takes place in 06 - 40 years later. No doubt the heads of NOW will put its entire history behind a bid to keep Roe v. Wade as we know it in place...in my opinion, based on all of the evidence I have before me, it'll be to no avail. It looks like the End of an Era. We'll see... Comments?
