Here's a nice exchange regarding how to study Jyotish; how to keep it simple....

Glad to help. Another thing I've learned, especially after going through all the stress of trying to learn Jyotish via the very poorly written books,....was discovering the Transits....

 

Each day, the planets and Sun are all doing something..... So, the 'Transits' in Jyotish are about the effects of the Planets on us at every moment...

 

Watching 'them' for a few months, way, back in 1993, I had this realization that not only were they helpful for the every day life; but.... they are also very indicative of 'Jyotish' in general.

 

In other words, each day, as expressed in the Transits, is also symbolic of what it would be like, if someone was to be born on that day!

 

So, the Transits, really, teach us about Jyotish too.

 

You can even experience and therefore, validate all the rules that you read about in Jyotish, but you can confirm their reality, in every day experiences....

 

Jyotish became alive when I started studying the Transits....

 

And then, I realized....that the 'simpler' I made Jyotish the better....

Another thought about how to keep Jyotish simpler, is to focus on 3 primary things.

#1, study the Basic birth chart, it contains many exact and precise Jyotish configurations that express the really amazing, literal, '1 to 1 Correspondence' between your life,....and your Jyotish chart...

 

#2, study the dasas, which are just the karmic repercussions of the patterns contained in your chart... and

 

#3, study the transits....

 

I find that 90% of what people go through can be found in these 3 areas....

 

So, all this other Jyotish, divisional charts, nakshatras....etc..... represent more refinement, and more detail....but the basic....chart, life print, can be glimpsed by these big 3!

Thank you Mark for your elucidating reply. Your insight and knowledge is much appreciated, especially for someone trying to make sense of the complex science of Jyotish.

I think of that...whenever I contemplate Malefics...

 

I believe, that all the Planets are essentially, Benefic!

 

They're just the consequences of our actions, coming back to us....related to all the different aspects of ourselves...via the planets...

 

But, it's also true, that the 6th, 8th, & 12th Houses...especially do have, often, a functional malefic.... effect for us..

 

And for each ascendent...different Planets rule those, too often, malefic,...6th, 8th & 12th houses...

 

Specifically, you were asking... what it might be like, this...6th House lord,...placed in the 8th...?

 

Remember,....almost all planets....love being in Sagittarius...so that's a plus...

 

But, the way to ask yourself, whether this Lord, Venus, is sybolic..of some maleficness, is to investigate into the nature of that house.... and you can discover....whether it's acting malefically or not...

 

8th house, is about longevity,...and transformations....

so often, length of life is glimsed there...but also, ....one's abilities...to perform transformations, for progess in life...

 

Ask yourself, whether you have any chronic habits, compulsions, and frustrating habits, that have been hard for you to break?

 

This would be the first, idea that would come from especially the 6th House, lord Venus, in the 8th....?

 

In other words, the 6th House, lord, of health,....has gone to the 8th house....

so ....health is connected....to these chronic,...ailments..or habits...

 

So, look into how you can....strengthen, this all-important....transformative power, within, you...

and then, you may discover....how to turn around even, a pesky, uncomfortable, malefic quality...

[sJC: Achyuta Gurukul] Can anyone help me understand functional malefics?

 

 

Hare Krsna and pranams to all,

 

A taurus ascendent has venus and jupiter acting as functional

malefics. Venus, lord of the 6th, is placed in the 8th, and Jupiter

is placed in the 11th.

Can anyone tell me how this may affect a person, especially during

his Venus sub period?
