Dear all,

I am delighted to soak in another forum of valuable discusssions.I

do wish i knew at leats the basics of astrology so that i can

appreciate the jupiters, the venus and the cancer and virgo and their

houses better. They are almost greek to me.

Is there some place where I can pick up some basic lessons which will

help me understand this better.

Hi Mark and Everyone,

> Rahu's in Aries, influencing Leo, due to it's 5th House aspect, and Mars in

> in Taurus, influencing Leo, from it's 4th House aspect.

Well, this is the trigger for me as Rahu and Mars have been affecting my

Aries Moon in my 10th house. I wanted to discuss the effects of Rahu/Ketu on

the lights as I feel we may experience them differently in a modern context,

with people arranging holidays and outings to watch eclipses and being

inspired by them. I love eclipses, but then my Rahu and Ketu are exalted.

The end of Rahu dasa brought success for me: my first book was deliberately

timed to arrive at a publisher on the August 1999 solar eclipse, and it

started my career as a writer.

I'm not experiencing Rahu on my moon with the fear Vedic astrology tells us

should be the case with Rahu/Sun or Rahu/Moon, but rather am sometimes

restless in the sense of anticipating change that keeps promising to arrive

but hasn't yet. Yesterday, for example, I changed some things around in the

home (Moon)...well, my western astrological Moon is in Taurus, and once I've

placed things they usually stay there - very fixed, but yesterday I wanted

change (and I well know how the home is representative of the self, so yes I

obviously do want some changes there with Rahu nudging me). It won't

surprise you when I say that I have Jupiter in the fourth natally, so here

is Jupiter in the equation.

It just fascinates me the way that western and eastern astrology view such

things as the nodes differently (I devoted a whole chapter to eclipses and

the nodes in my book Praise to the Moon). I'm also fascinated by the way we

can be like both our western and Vedic charts. I'm so much a Capricorn and

very much a Leo ascendant and Moon Taurus, yet I'm also very much a Sun in

Sagittarius/Moon in Aries...and I can see the Cancerian characteristics of

my lagna sometimes.

I mention my own experience, but more to give examples than to run on about

me. I'd be more than interested to hear what others on the list have to say

about these points.

>

> Hope you get some software soon...

The annoying thing is that I actually had Parashara's Light when I used a

PC. Of course, it won't transfer to the Mac. Nobody does Vedic software that

works with the new Mac OS. Parashara's Light told me last Summer it was due,

then they said it would be February, now they've promised it will be the

beginning of April. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but it is difficult for

software developers to design for OS X, probably because of the Unix basis.

It is quite frustrating for me...my tutor has to keep sending me the

relevant charts for the course.

Well, hope I've given some food for thought and others will give some input

on the points I've raised.

Blessings,

Flick.

Dear Veena, dear friends, dear Mark,

For the basics, there are some files and lessons at the files sections of other Jyotish groups, also some of the websites have some lessons available.

"But" I do not think this is the best way to go. Best is to get 2-3 "good" basic books, and read and study the one that you like the best. One good book for beginning is "Light on Life, An introduction to the astrology of India" by Defouw and Svoboda. This is both a beginners book and is quite comprehensive. Also the information inside is very well organized for the beginner, e.g. the reader learns in a logical sequence of steps.

There is a huge number of books printed on Jyotish, but most is not suitable for the beginner, since they are not well organized, reading the thoughts and knowledge of a Jyotish Pandit, written down in an unorganized manner (even though the text may be very valuable) is not conducive to easy learning in steps.

Once you get the basics more or less straight, it would be good to get a copy of the, what I would call the basic book for Jyotish, Parashara's Hora Shastra, which is a "reference" book.

Jyotish according to my beleif is a science but is unlike sciences like Maths and Physics, where you build blocks of knowledge one on the top of the other. For the basics this may be so to a certain extent. But as you advance you can not continue in logical steps except by the guidance of a good Guru. It is more the development of one faculty of the mind, which can be termed as "Jyotish intuition", and this comes from much practice, and reading, not so much logic.

When you look at a chart, you see 9 Planets/Grahas in 12 Houses/Bhavas. An accomplished Jyotish Pandit can derive from this, unimaginable amount of insight and predictions, and all this can not be formulised in a systematic series of logical formulas. Going by the basic principles in the books, one can say 100 things for a chart, 60 of which may be contradicting to others, and to the reality of the native represented by the chart. So in comes "intuition" which would seperate the applicable from the non-applicable, through a process that can not be formulised logically. So the only solution (according to my humble view) is to practice and practice with a good set of basic tools, e.g. knowledge and principles.

I've seen on discussion lists things like; "For this chart, this is here and that is there, so how come the result (or the perdiction) is like that, I do not beleive this is possible". This kind of too simplistic apporach to Jyotish I beleive does not work, so one should not be expecting a simple logical formula or method to become a good Jyotishi, this simply does not exist, since intuition can not be formulised into a logical and a systematic / complete set of rules.

This by the way, is the fun side of Jyotish, since arguments based on different views can go on and on.

One should also be aware of the fact that there is not one single method and set of tools to analyse a chart. Two Jyotishis using an almost totally different sets of tools can analyse the same chart and arrive at the same predictions.

Best regards, Adnan.
