Dear All:

It's a very good question, really, What determines good and/or bad planets?

It brings up the point very nicely, that Vedic Astrology believes in 'good and bad'!

Jyotish believes that Planets can be 'good' or positive in one person's chart, and 'negative' or 'bad' in another's....

One of the things I love the most about Jyotish is that it has 'discrimination'.

You hear so often in so-called, 'spiritual circles', today, that one shouldn't judge,

that everything is really 'good'....

Therefore, I find it actually very refreshing that Jyotish is willing to go out on a line to say what it believes is 'right' or 'wrong'.

Though if you consider the Source or one of the founders of Astrology, the Ancient Seer, Maharishi Parashara, you can't help but think this 'good or bad' status of the Planets might be more complicated.

He says, in his book called 'Hora Shastra', in the beginning, 'Lord Vishnu entered into the Grahas to bestow upon all living beings, the consequences due to their Karmas. "

When I read that, I realized that All Planets, therefore must be Good!

So, what does it mean when one of these 'divinely endowed Planets', is bringing us our 'negative' or uncomfortable karmas?

It means it's functioning as a 'bad' or malefic Planet.

Hence this concept in Jyotish of 'functioning Malefic Planets'.

So, we should realize essentially all Planets are Good, though at particular times, and in particular Charts, it could function 'malefically'.

So, what determines this 'functioning Maleficness'?

We do!

If the Planets and/or our Charts, represent our 'karmas' coming back to us,

then, 'we' are the source of the 'good and the bad', in our charts...

Therefore if we are the source of this good and bad, then, we are the source of it's transformation!

One of the greatest things I've ever heard about Jyotish occurred when I was in India, attending an Ayurvedic course, in 1988.

One of the Vedic Scholars said a very interesting thing about Jyotish. He said: " Don't take your chart, seriously like it's written in stone, it's just the state of Physiology, at the time of birth. "

I've thought a lot about this over the years and I think it helps us understand not only the nature of maleficness, but entertains the notion that we're meant to improve, even transform our 'malefic' Planets into something more healthy.

If you've got high blood pressure and you go to an Ayurvedic doctor, he will feel your pulse, and may tell you you've got pitta out of balance and it's invaded the kapha space.

Then, if you go to the Jyotishee, right down the street, he'll say; 'ahhh, yes, you've got Mars dosha, and you'll be experiencing this Mars out of balance, till June!'

We need to start thinking that the Planets represent our Physiology and even our Psychology, and as such as we improve ourselves, our health, our body's functionings as well as our mental states, we'll be literally changing and improving our Jyotish Planets.

Next time someone asks you which are the good or bad Planets in Jyotish?, say:

All the Planets are good, though right now, I've got a functioning Malefic Saturn!

They'll say what the heck does that mean and you'll say: 'It mean's I'm out of balance with the Wisdoms of Saturn, so it's acting malefic, to me.

But, since I've been practicing Jyotish remedial measures, especially meditation, and learning to be more in-tune with all the daily, monthly and yearly cycles, and learning patience, and Saturn timings..... I'm finding that Saturn is beginning to function less malefically, and I'm looking forward to the day, when 'He', becomes a complete Benefic, as he's really meant to be!

Sincerely,
