Guest guest
Dear Friends: Here's an interesting dialogue regarding the purposes and functions of such things as Jyotish, Ayurved and yoga, or meditaion. Sincerely, Mark Kincaid Dear Friends: From what I understand, Maharishi's special interest in mood-making has come about in trying to describe what happens when the technology of easy, natural transcendence has been lost. Then, people find themselves with wonderful descriptions and scriptures full of the glory and benefits of the Goal...but without a clear way to get there. Then, people find themselves wishing and wanting to have those experiences and many kinds of mood-making expressions develop. Maharishi says, this is like desireing 'food', or bread. We can desire it and desire it, wish that someone could bring us some bread, on and on. But, what we really need to do is go to the refrigerator and get it! Like that...we've learned to go directly to the source of all life:.... the Cosmic refrig.... the Self.... and from there....everything comes naturally.... However,..... there is a new twist to all this recently.... And that is...actually not too recently now that I think of this... but in the late 70's....Maharishi was reviewing the progress that people were experiencing all over the world due to this new effortless technique of transcending and he said at this time: 'meditation is good, you're all progressing quite nicely..... but I'm wondering if there are any other aspects of Vedic knowledge that we might find to help us, in this progress towards enlightenment...' It was at this time, then, that Maharishi started talking about Ayurved and Jyotish and Ghandhara....and yaguas,..... and now, finally stapatyaved.... I didn't notice it at the time, but I did notice when I received on one of my Ayurvedic consultations...that I should do certain 'behaviorial rasayanas'. I asked what these meant.. And he said, these are conscious actions that you can 'do' to literally help and improve your life... My first reaction was, well what about Maharishi's old adage, not to engage in mood-making? And the Ayurvedic Viadya said, no, 'behavioral rasayanas' are a good complement to the natural transcending of TM. Well, I didn't think much about it, till many years later I was on an Ayurvedic course in India with Maharishi, and at the very end Maharishi was commenting upon Ayurved and he said: " Both, Ayurved and Jyotish have an essential purpose to eliminate the pragya parads, within. " I never forgot that, and in fact was so inspired that I came back to the states and feverishly studying Jyotish. After a few years I realized there is a tremendous wealth of knowledge that exists there in our charts, that could act like Ayurved as an adjunct or complement to transcending. Then, I realized that time when Maharishi started bringing out all these other aspects of Vedic knowledge...and I realized...he was literally changeing that initial Philosophy...that you can't solve a problem on the level of the problem. Even Ayurved talks about how, the blister, though it's the symptom of some underlieing problem that should be addressed by changeing the underlieng blood and body chemistry; still it can be also solved by nurshing the wound, or symptom on the level of the problem, too. Like that....now, we can begin to look at mood-making in a slightly different way. It's very mood inspiring to go to a lecture on Maharishi, or go to Church, or sing Hymns. These are not meant to take the place of transcendence, and can in fact add a lot to the overall growth. Personally, I think Maharishi was partly trying to make this whole Vedic wisdom more palatable. Because if he'd come out with the whole ball of wax, at once, we would have been overwhelmed. Add on top of that, the fact that there has been this great need for inner, effortless progress of consciousness... and you can see his reservation about the traditional other things, like reading of scriptures, or thinking of the name of God, or singing bhajans,... in comparison to transcendence...and without transcendence...these could be looked at as mood-making... But, with transcendence...they can have their place in life. Let's resolve however to understand the difference between the 2, and never forget the crucial....importance of transcendence. I'll never forget all the wonderful times Maharishi emphasized this point. And how all of culture, at times, forgets to water the root! Because this is so subtle, and easily forgotten, because our awareness if primarily .... directed outwords... and away from the transcendent.. This knowledge is crucial! It was fun hearing your question and responding.... Jai Guru!.... Sincerely, Mark Kincaid PS....I don't know if you've heard, but I also write a Jyotish newsletter.
