[VRI] Fwd: Is astrology a science or a religious myth? in which aspect?

Dear Rohini,

I do not call astrology as science as there are some esoteric elements in it. If

some people do not believe in it one has to leave them alone. In the same way

one should not object to anybody's believing in astrology. The Grahas and the

Nakshatras may effect us either in  inperceptible or in imperceptible ways. The

Jupiter is protecting us by diverting to itself some stray heavenly bodies,

which otherwise would have hit the Earth. We see the effect of the Sun and the

Moon on water when go to the sea-side and we should not forget that our bodies

have more water than anything else.  If one one wants to evaluate these

effects anew on statistical basis we should not object to it. But if one

condemns astrology just because he thinks that the Grahas and the Nakshatras

cannot affect us or that any relation between the heavenly bodies and us cannot

exist then  that condemnation is unpardonable.

Moreover the Hindus are right in getting upset when AKK and his likes  are

trying their best  to distort the antiquity of Hindu astrology and that is an

attack on Hinduism itself as Jyotish is a subject which has sanction from the

ancient Dharmashastra Manu Smriti.

Best wishes,

Sunil K. Bhattacharjya

Dear Dada-bhai,

Perhaps I am sticking my nose in the wrong gun-slinging but over the short

teen-chaar decades of dabbling with jyotish etc what I have noticed is that

there seems to be a tendency to claim before prooving! Scientists doing such

would get killed, metaphorically at least in the real world out there, even if

some may call it 'phani' (or the way a Bangali $wamiji that I came across long

ago would have pronounced " funny " if you catch my drift!)!

If astrology is indeed science and astrologers seem to be overeager to claim and

prove it to be, and that is perfectly fine, but did Science get established as a

MAJOR force to be reckoned with in modern reality by going back to its

scriptures (papers written in 1700s or 1800s?).

NO! It (and scientists) built upon what was created by Giants of Yore but with

reasonable caution! While *LATER-DAY* Scientists gratefully climbed on the

shoulders of their GIANT pioneers, they always made sure that they packed a

working parachute before the climb! Being pragmatic by disposition, they took

into account the 'risk': What if the ancient cookie crumbles!! Cookies are known

to biodegrade over long periods of time. Yes??

natal charts tell us about past karma and in this life we reap according to our

past karma and the present karma together and that is why some present karmas

do influence on our past karmaphal. In the Mahabharata also there umpteen

instances of  omens (effect of the grahas and nakhsatras).  Hindus believe

in all these. Astrology was there in the Hindu culture from the beginning and it

is mentioned in the Manu Smriti. Besides Hindus the other religions and

communities also have such beliefs. The christians believe that Jesus Christ

himself predicted that he would resurrect after death and that he accordingly

resurrected yet after his death he could appear before some of his disciples

in flesh amd blood.

They also believe

> that Jesus was born of a virgin mother and that Jesus could walk on water.

Christians also believe that the soul dies on death. Islam also believes that

the Moon was split into two parts by Prophet Muhammad and that prophet Muhammad

had once journeyed to some distant far-away inaccessible regions in one night.

Dear Rohiniji,

i agree this 'is' a part of research and also wish those who wants to

establish jyotish as science successful in their endevour.

I am neither frustrated nor threatened for this or that.I am clear in my

mind that there will be people who negate just as there will be people

who are positive.Thats the reason the argument/research goes on and

on.Thats the beauty/curse of the duality.

As far as i am concerned it is an established super science.period.I am

sorry that i can not compare it with chemistry or any other science

simply because you cant prove it like chemistry(in the lab).

gopi.

frustrated! :-)) because it is a very well tested and true paradigm and

approach! Demonstrate the usefulness, reproducibility and validity of

something, say a discipline, a subject and human beings will take

notice! Humans are not foolish, though they get impatient and distracted

easily. They react because it is the sign of intelligence. Like between

a kitten and a tortoise -- which one would you really think is

intelligent, despite the cat living a much shorter life than a massive

tortoise or a sloth or a lizard or a slab of granite?
