Guest guest
Dear friends, There is a big conundrum. As per Astrological texts, Makar Sankranti (Sun in Capricorn 00:01 deg) is supposed to be the day when Sun starts its Uttarayana. And this is supposed to occur during Winter Solstice. Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occured on 21st Dec 2007. The Declination of the Sun (distance from the Equator) is 00:00:00 on 20th March 2008, when it would start moving Northward Journey. As per Lahiri Ayanamsha, on 15th Jan 2008, Sun will be 00:00:01 deg in Capricorn with the Declination of -21:18:45, far below the Equator. All this do not seem to add up at all. Where are we going wrong? raj
Guest guest
Hi Yes it is puzzling. In a nutshell Sun begins northern journey from extreme southern point 23 26 South, its solstice point in Dhanu, but is not considered to be in full northern declination until aligned with Meena which is 00 00 North where currently the ecliptic path crosses the celestial equator. If Uttaryana is the exact time that Sun begins its northern journey then it is bewildering as to why Makara sakranti is used for deciding the Sun has started its northern course I agree, as it begins this journey in Dhanu immediately after it has reached a peak solstice. Actually in most parts of Europe 22nd December was considered solstice, in fact from 21-23 the Sun was at its highest southern declination in December 07, but the exact date for solstice in the west at least, is currently considered when the Sun reaches 00 00 degrees SIGN Capricorn i.e 22nd December in most of Europe at least. Nearly one thousand years ago the solstice was 16th December at 23 24 South, much higher than the 2007 declination. This could lead us to deduce that given the Sun can solstice at varying times during transit of Dhanu constellation, perhaps ingress into Makara constellation is considered a sure fire way to establish that the Sun has really and undoubtedly started its northern climb? best wishes M - indiadirector Monday, January 14, 2008 5:50 AM Makar Sankranti, Uttarayana and Winter Solstice Dear friends, There is a big conundrum. Guest guest
Dear Raj ji, Uttarayan means journey northwards. This northward journey is in relation to its journey towards north from the tropic of capricorn and not from the equator. After the winter solstice the Sun starts its journey north and hence the Sun is said to go uttarayan [ on its northerly path]. Sincerely, RPSingh , " indiadirector " <raj wrote: > > Dear friends, > There is a big conundrum. > As per Astrological texts, Makar Sankranti (Sun in Capricorn 00:01 > deg) is supposed to be the day when Sun starts its Uttarayana. Guest guest
Sorry that final para should say the solstice was 23 34 South 16th Dec 1066 for example - Marg Monday, January 14, 2008 5:35 PM Re: Makar Sankranti, Uttarayana and Winter Solstice Hi Yes it is puzzling.
