Guest guest
Hi, Wouldn't the Sun get directional strength where it is strongest---which is in the South? If the Lagna/East is where the Sun rises it then moves to the highest point of the Midheaven or noon point which would be the 10th house. I knew this intellectually for a long time but truthfully was always a bit confused about it---the place I live in now has a room that has windows that face east and south---I've been able to observe the first signs of light as the Sun moves from it's darkest point which is north to show up in the east window and continue to climb towards the southern window and begin the set in my western windows. 10th house is south and the darkest point in the fourth house or the midnight point. Guest guest
Dear Vic, Vikas and Linda, This should clarify things :-) The Sun crosses the meridian of a place at mid-day. The intersection of the ecliptic (i.e., the sun's apparent path around the earth) with the meridian of a place is termed as the midheaven which in other words corresponds to the cusp of the tenth house of a horoscope. The meridian of a place thus passes, around the earth, through north pole, midheaven (10th house or zenith), south pole nadir (4th house) and back to the north pole. Guest guest
Dear All, I'm Glad to see that everyone is as confused about this as I am!!! =) I've confirmed with Hart De Faouw that the 10th House is South (as it should be since it is an Earth bhava). Here is why the SOUTH is the MIDHAVEN or highest point in the sky (10th House). Jyotish is developed in the northern hemisphere - the highest point in the zodiac, in the northern hemisphere is due south. It could be argued that for natives of the southern hemisphere the midhaven should be in the North / 4th House. So, for me at least, the 10th House is conclusively South! Yours, Vic DiCara / Vraja Kishor http://www.vedicastrologer.net PS - Mrs. Wendy, please consider the planet's do not pass through the north pole ever. the neither the pole star nor vega are in the zodiac. Midhaven is not the north pole, but the highest point *in the zodiac*, which is (traditionally) in the Southern portion of the sky. Thus, the left side of the North indian chart (houses 1-6) are internal houses because the planets are " underground " on that (northern) part of the sky (northern part of the zodiac is " burried " benieah the horizon. These houses pertain to knowledge, emotions, intelligence, etc. The right ride of the chart (houses 7-12) are external, they are the houses in the visible sky, the southern half of the zodiac. They pertain to action, fulfillment of plans, etc. On Sep 13, 2008, at 7:16 AM, Wendy Vasicek wrote: > Dear Vic, Vikas and Linda, > > This should clarify things :-) > > The Sun crosses the meridian of a place at mid-day. Guest guest
Dear Vic, I think the confusion here is that the bhavas are constructed relative to the Celestial Sphere...an imaginary projection of earth in all directions up to infinity. The important thing to remember here is that we're talking about the Celestial North Pole and not the Geographic North Pole. The North Celestial Pole is the point in the sky about which all the stars seen from the Northern Hemisphere rotate. The North Star, also called Polaris, is located almost exactly at this point in the sky. When we calculate a horoscope manually we need to make the necessary adjustments for southern latitudes in order to locate the correct Asc (rising sign). Thus we find that whether one is born in the Northern hemisphere or Southern hemisphere the Sun always rises in the East (Asc), crosses the meridian (midheaven) of a place around mid-day (10th house), sets in the West (7th house), and passes through the south pole nadir (4th house) around midnight. To save time and, more importantly my energy, let me just past a little from an article I have... [The space around the earth extends to an infinite extent. To us, the extension of space upto the zodiac is of primary importance. Celestrial Sphere is an imaginary projection of the earth in all directions upto infinity. An extension of the plane of terrestial equator into space is called the celestial equator . Any great circle that joins the celestial north and south poles is called a meridian. The meridian of a place corresponds to the terrestrial longitude. The meridian passing through Greenwitch corresponds to zero degree of longitude, and is termed as the Principal meridian or the Standard meridian. The angular distance between the principal meridian and the meridian of a given place (i.e., the angle subtended by the principal meridian and the meridian of a given place, at the centre of the earth) is called the longitude of a place. The Sun crosses the meridian of a place at mid-day. The intersection of the ecliptic (i.e., the sun's apparent path around the earth) with the meridian of a place is termed as the midheaven which in other words corresponds to the cusp of the tenth house of a horoscope. I've also put both yours and my charts (Vedic Wheel Style) on a temporary page for you to look at. See here http://jyotishvidya.com/paste.htm You can see quite easily from this, that, although you were born in the Northern hemisphere and I in the Southern, the Ascendant still falls on the Eastern horizon, the 10th is still the midheaven...and so forth. You Wrote: ///Jyotish is developed in the northern hemisphere - the highest point in the zodiac, in the northern hemisphere is due south./// Again I must point out that the horoscope is seen in relation to the Celestial Sphere....not in relation to the Geographical North or South. Guest guest
Dear Mrs. Wendy, I agree entirely with what you have written. Now, if you map it out fully you'll see in the northern hemisphere the Midhaven / 10th House is oriented to the south. In the southern Hemisphere the midhaven would be oriented to the north. In other words in the northern hemisphere you would have to face south to observe the midhaven. In the southern hemisphere you would have to face north to observe it in the sky. Guest guest
Dear Vic, When casting the horoscope, the necessary calculations are made in relation to N/S latitudes. For instance, we add 12 hrs to the sidereal time of birth to find the correct sidereal time. Then, in order to find the correct lagna, we add or subtract 6 signs for southern latitude. So, when the horoscope is cast, the midheaven (10th house) is ALWAYS oriented to the CELESTIAL North Pole. When we consider the direction to which we may travel etc., then, because our feet are firmly on terra-firma, we must (obviously) consider the geographical directions. But this is a different matter entirely to the Celestial sphere. I must leave it here for now, I'm afraid, and get some rest. Guest guest
Dear Mrs. Wendy, I see your point, the " galactic north " - is always the midhaven point. My point however is that the 10th House represents the earthly south and is physically oriented towards that direction. Thanks for your time and energy!
